Default Separation of Church and State: Is this still being respected?

    check this out: http://www.philstar.com/philstar/NEWS200606290402.htm

I dont know about you guys, but isnt it supposed to be the job of a congressman to file an impeachment complaint? There are reasons why there is a law separating the Church from the State. I just dont understand why some Bishops still insist on doing political moves when even the Pope himself in the Vatican supports GMA...

another clear example of our crab mentality... just when we are climbing, someone pulls us down...

    your thoughts please...

I find the news so disappointing, if not appalling. Imagine, our Constitution specifically states a provision stating the separation of the Church and the State and we find some of these bishops meddling in the affairs of the State. Spare me the reason that they are citizens of this country. From what I see, they are using their positions, being bishops of the Church, to influence the people on the issue. The people won't buy the recycled impeachment complaints of these known politicians. As such, they are finding means to seemingly put a degree of authority when these bishops filed their complaint. I don't think the people will agree on this scenario as well.

If they have some respect, they should not ride on such political gimmicks. They are not politicians, anyway.

every Filipino citizen can file an impeachment complaint against the president. A priest/bishop can still claim he is a Filipino.

Given the President’s sometimes faulty -- or selective -- memory, the administration would save itself further embarrassment by not harping on the encouragement and support the Pope supposedly gave to her policies and her work. On this trip, it was almost painful to hear Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye briefing reporters about the talking points between the Pope and the President. Bunye said that during her meeting with the Pope, Ms Arroyo would discuss the sainthood of two Filipinos as well as the appointment of more Filipino cardinals. “We have two pending applications for sainthood,” he said. “Maybe she will work for the sainthood of the two beatified Filipinos.” He went on to say that Ms Arroyo would take up the “naming of more cardinals” because being the biggest Catholic country in Asia, “proportionately we should have more cardinals in the College of Cardinals.”

And look, it's not only the bishops who are meddling in politics, It is also the other way around... politicians meddling wit the the affairs of the Church.

    so what's with it?

I guess the church is REDICULOUS! They themselves (priests) should be impeached! Wa may klaro ang simbahan jud. If they want a clean Philippines, they should clean their own backyard too. I'm sure the catholic church have their own problems, like molestation, gay priest and child abuses, rape cases and all that stuff.

you have a good point there bro.*

i think there is still a big difference between what GMA is doing there right now to the bishop who filed for impeachment. I dont think i call it "meddling" in its strongest sense when you suggest to the pope that we need more cardinals or sainthood of certain Filipinos. If you were GMA, representing the Filipino nation, visiting the Pope, what would you talk about diay, di ba? I mean I dont think they would be discussing the World Cup or the latest NBA Finals. (kudos to the Mavs, btw.)*

Our constitution, even if you look at the preamble, clearly is being founded under God's aid. You cannot remove the foundation without destroying the building.

This bishop from Caloocan is clearly misled by his emotions. When you are ordained, you are a Priest first, then a citizen.. at least thats how I would think. Im not a catholic btw, so I might be wrong.*

impeachment kasi is such a strong political process. You are bringing accusations against the president. Even if you check www.m-w.com for its definition, it is to charge with a crime or misdemeanor. If its the truth that he wants, lets do it in the correct and proper forums/commitees. Di naman truth seeking iya gipangita diri kundi ouster. he is already charging the president of poll fraud, hardly a fact finding endeavor...

You're right. When GMA talked with the Italian Prime Minister, they discussed social protection and benefits for the OFWs in Italy. When she talked with Italian businessmen, they talked investments in the Philippines. When she meets with King Carlos of Spain, they will also talk economic, labor and diplomatic matters. When she met with King Abdullah of Saudi, she was able to secure the release of hundreds of Filipino detainees, and millions worth of investments in the Philippines. When she talks with the Pope, naturally it will be about matters of religion. Naturally their conversation would dwell on our being a largely Catholic nation and being special to Pope John Paul II. That's diplomacy. Something the opposition obviously don't have, which is why they have weak support from their colleagues in Congress.

Yes, they would be in their proper sphere in providing spiritual guidance to ALL Filipinos. They should recognize that there are also many right-thinking Filipinos who still support PGMA, and that they, as spiritual leaders, should remain politically neutral and instead focus on ministering to the spiritual lives of the faithful.
