MANILA, Philippines -- Senatorial candidate John Carlos "JC" de los Reyes believes there should be no constitutional principle of separation of Church and state, saying that an individual should not be separated from his conscience.
De los Reyes, who is running under the Ang Kapatiran Party or the Alliance for the Common Good, said: "Para mong hiniwalay 'yung indibidwal sa konsensya niya. Kung Katoliko po ako o Muslim ako, ihahalal ako ng taumbayan bilang Katoliko o Muslim na ang konsensya ang magsasalita sa Senado."
During Tuesday's "Harapan 2013," de los Reyes, who calls himself a "political missionary," also said that elections should not be just about winning or losing but about principles.
He said voters should only support candidates from responsible and accountable political parties.
"If we are elected, we want principles to stand out, not personalities or faces."
"Aside from doing the right things, we want to do things right. That's why hindi niyo po ko makikitang maging traditional politician or putting tarpaulins with my face except [during] campaigns," he said.
No to divorce law, political dynasties
De los Reyes , who is against a divorce law, cited the "need to preserve the family as basic unit of society" as one of the reasons why he does not support the proposal.
"The state must continue to thwart for any move for divorce. We have to preserve the family... Any move to dissolve marriages must be quelled."
"Broken families -- that's not good for us. It's not Filipino," he added.
The Ang Kapatiran bet claimed that in order to solve marriage problems, the government should just provide lawyers to the poor and assist them in their legal needs when filing for annulment.
De los Reyes said if elected, he would also continue fighting against political dynasties which he called "a pain to the country."
He said he will also push for the passage of the freedom of the information (FOI) bill and the abolition of pork barrel funds.
"We believe if these key legislation are passed, the lives of the Filipinos will be better," de los Reyes said.
