August 31 is National Heroes Day. This is celebrated every fourth Monday of August to pay homage to our heroes who sacrificed their lives for their country.
When I was younger, the heroes I knew were those in our history books like Jose Rizal and Andres Bonifacio. Eventually I learned that they were not the only heroes of the country but the modern day men and women who are risking their lives to save ours.
Firefighters
Not only are they the ones who will protect you from fire but from any other calamity like earthquake. These are the people who are courageous enough to face the risks head-on.
Doctors and nurses
They save lives. They take care of you when you or your loved ones get sick. Even if they get tired with the different situations they get themselves into, still they make sure they get the job done. Not to mention, they are the first ones at risk in getting various diseases.
Police and military
They are our armor. They shield us when conflict arises. They are the ones who uphold the law and establish peace and order in our country.
Overseas Filipino Workers
They work and live in a strange country to provide a better life for the family they left behind. They endure hunger, stress and homesickness to earn more for their family.
These are the people we should salute to and pay homage. These are the modern day heroes who deserve our respect. Let us include them in commemorating the heroism of our fellow countrymen.
