February 28, 2015. It was a day I looked forward to. I knew it was gonna be an exciting one not only for me but for my son and the rest of the Children’s Paradise Montessori School students, their parents and the teachers and staff. After weeks of preparation and hardwork, the time has come to showcase their talent to the rest of Cebu.
The Little Mermaid Jr was the first ever Disney musical production played by children for children (and adults too). Held at STC Auditorium, the event was produced by CPMS President Marivic Bathan and directed by world-renowned director Allan M. Nazareno and co-directed by Rudy Aviles.
Excitement filled me when the auditorium lights came off and was replaced by colorful lights dancing on stage to a medley of The Little Mermaid songs. As a person who experienced theater back in college, I
had that side of me who was sort of a critic when it comes to play productions. Not only about the talent of the characters but of the props, the lighting and the sound. As a Disney fan myself, I was enthusiastic to see how one of my favorite Disney movies come to life on stage.
Then the curtain was up and the show began.
The props I saw on stage were perfect- the boat, King Triton’s kingdom, Ariel’s hidden room full of human stuff and Ursula’s cave. It was delightful to see those little kids dressed as sea creatures, turtles
and flamingoes swaying their arms and smiling. They really had so much fun! The main characters Prince Eric and Ariel, as well as the other lead characters, acted their part very well and it seemed so natural to them. The delivery of the lines, their facial expressions and the emotions they delivered to the audience were all perfect.
Overall, the show was spectacular!
The joy of seeing such amazing talent in those children make me so proud as a Cebuano. I commend Children’s Paradise Montessori School for giving these kids an opportunity to be part of Cebu’s first premier broadway production. I commend the creative team for giving their time and talent in making this production possible. I look forward to another grand musical production for kids by kids. Till the next curtain calls!
