• Pure Light, Perfect Light: A Christmas Musical

Pure Light, Perfect Light is a story about false accusations, jealousy, and bitterness. It is also a story about love and how it is willing to bear false accusations to protect the object of one’s love. It is a story that portrays our natural grasping and stumbling through life until we experience the peace that reconciliation brings.

The play begins with the lines, “Dear Diary, I remember that night very clearly as if it had just happened yesterday. I’ll never forget how horrible it all was. It is the echoing of the screams and the terrible, deafening sound of the blazing inferno, that haunts me to this day. There was but one thought that filled my mind during those terrifying moments, saving my darling sister, Amy. Mumsie died when Amy was but a baby so Papa left us in the care of his sister, Aunt Meg. He too died shortly after that. We love Aunt Meg but somehow I always felt responsible for Amy. I made sure she was always by my side and that she didn’t lack for love or hugs and kisses. I would have braved though any fire that threatened her, but it wasn’t her that needed saving that night. No, it wasn’t her, but I didn’t know. I didn’t know until it was too late.”

Pure Light, Perfect Light features Maria Kim Y. Martinez as Lucy, Hannah Mariel Caparros as Amy, Joe Branzuela as Rebecca, Jason Brooks as Uncle John, and Kristine Y. Martinez as Aunt Meg. It is created and directed by Maloy Yap Martinez and the choir is directed by Mavic Fuentes Quintana. Choir members are Ferdinand P. Aragon, Alain James F. Dujenio, Joseph Rey F. Dujenio, Jhon Resty A. Fuentes, John Frederick F. Quintana, Daven B. Toyhacao, Robbie Jean B. Alvarado, Nicole L. Rubillos, Gwendolyn G. Venus.

There are two shows within the day: the matinee at 4:00pm with tickets at P75 and P100, and the gala at 8:00pm with tickets at P150 and P200. Meet the Cast

Maria Kim Y. Martinez is a Graduate of BS Math at Cebu Normal University and is a Teacher at Child Learning Foundation. She studied classical voice under Ms Maria Mila Nadala and music under Dr. Charito Pizarro. She sings regularly at several official events in Cebu. She has starred as Dorothy in Benjie Diola’s The Wiz

“I enjoy singing and I am grateful for all the experiences that it has given me. The best feeling is when I make people smile or make them feel the emotions I am trying to convey. Ultimately, I am grateful for singing because I know it is something the Lord has given me. I am grateful that He is pleased by the little gifts we give Him, which He gave to us in the first place.”

Joe Branzuela is a Graduate of BS Business Administration at Centre for International Education – Makati Campus, a Restaurateur of Anya’s Place, is the Billing and Collection’s Head at Selecta Freight Corporation, and is the Lead singer of Joe and the Boys.

“I have been surrounded by music all my life. After being exhausted by the limelight at a young age, there was a lull in my performing life but the desire to make music did not leave me. At 21 I was trained by professionals and got signed on to a prominent talent agency in Manila. It exhausted me all the same as it demanded for my soul. I met my bandmates and formed Joe and the Boys after that. My experience however in the world of musical theatre is very, very limited. I’ve made it to callbacks to international productions like Miss Saigon and Here Lies Love and that was it, but I thank the Lord that my first play, is finally, a performance not for the world or for my own, but for my Saviour.”

Hannah Mariel Caparros is a Graduate of Mass Communications at Saint Theresa’s College and is a Creative Director of Living Word Christian Churches of Cebu, Int’l. She has undergone an internship program at Sovereign Grace Music under Bob Kauflin in Louisville, KY. She has directed three theater plays, used to dance ballet and is into songwriting

Hannah claims her influences to be her mother and the works of her late grandfather, Miguel Velarde, composer of the famous "Dahil Sa Yo". “What inspires me to do these things? I do not own anything, not even my own talents. My heart is always to be a signboard pointing to God who is always the star of the show. My talents are God’s exclusively.”

Jason Brooks is a Graduate of Business Administration at Centre for International Education. He studied acting at the International Academy of Film and Television and has played roles for short films for international film festivals

“I picked up my first guitar at 15 back in England and have been writing songs ever since. Singing has always been my interest. I was able to sign on to a recording company in Manila two years ago but I decided to leave it and pursue my studies in acting. Acting was a talent that I only discovered through an audition that my friend made me tag along back in college. I’ve been acting in short films ever since. I’ve never been part of a stage play, so it is quite a transition for me to play a role in this musical. It has been enjoyable nonetheless especially since it is a story that represents Jesus’ love and forgiveness for all of us.”

Kristine Y. Martinez is a Graduate of Library and Information Science at University of San Carlos and is a Teacher and Librarian at Child Learning Foundation

“I am completely outclassed by the talent on the stage, and I don't sing in public, but they needed an Aunt Meg and I'm her. I haven't been on stage in 10 years but I love acting, and I am grateful for this opportunity to do what I love.”
