• The Ask.FM Hype

All you social media addicts can duly note that there is a new hype by the platform of ask.fm as more and more answers are posted in Twitter and Facebook accounts. To those who are not that familiar with what this is, it is a social medium where you set up a public account and people can send in their questions. The “interviewees” have an option to have their username displayed or submit questions anonymously.

Ask.Fm was launched last June 2010 in Latvia, as a competition against Formspring (if you guys can still remember or still has this in your smart phones). It quickly overtook Formspring in terms of worldwide traffic generated.

Tumblr and MyYearbook even has “Ask Me” features, validating the popularity of this kind of platform.

Being a global social network, Ask.Fm is a good avenue to get to know friends and other people and have conversations with fave celebrities who have an account.

      Features
Ask.FM has a like button similar to that of Facebook that can allow anyone to like the answers given. It also has an option to share answers to connected accounts of Facebook and Twitter prior to publishing. The notifications button will prompt user of any likes received, new questions and answers as well.

There is a feature that allows you to get a Random Question from the site, just to keep the hype of answering questions up.

One has the option not to answer questions that are degrading or offensive. You can also block some questions that are of that nature so as to prevent cyber bulling.

Navigating through the platform is quite simple and easy. While the hype is still on the go, we predict that there’d be lots of improvement from the site in the near future. We would be expecting Verification features like that of Twitter’s should celebrities join in the hype. We would be expecting a comments section as well and a mobile app soon.

      Controversy
Following the controversy of Formspring, Ask.FM also has received a campaign to be shut down, especially with a tragic suicide that happened because of abuse received over the website. Check story here. Considering the feature of asking anonymously, the site is slowly becoming an avenue for cyber bullying.

However, our stand on this is that any website can be an avenue for cyber bullying. Rather than attack the site, there should be programs to attack the bullies themselves. Even if the site will be shut down, there will always be site sprouting that could be an avenue for bullies.

As we always say, protect yourself from Cyber Bullying, especially your kids.. Read our story here.

To sum it up, it’s just as easy as “If you don’t want the questions, do not answer.”
