What started as an initiative of Albert Padin, whose father died due to COVID-19 has been helping hundreds of Filipinos.
Before his father succumbed to the disease after staying in the hospital for 7 days, he mentioned “Unsaon na lang sa mga walay kwarta... Luoy kaayo.” (“How can the poor deal with this... It’s so sad.”)
While his dad was at the hospital, and he had all expensive medical equipment around him helping him as he couldn’t breathe, he was still thinking and was concerned for others, specially the poor.
As Albert and his family are coping up with the grief, they were inspired to help others.
This is how The Rice Movement started.
Albert realized that over 1 million Filipinos lost their jobs due to the COVID-19 health crisis. Most of them are minimum-wage earners or breadwinners who are now required to stay home without any income to feed their families.
If some are forced to go out to look for food, we all lose. We need to help each other stay at home so we can all get this over with.
The Rice Movement is an initiative to provide assistance to these hardworking families with support from the community. We are raising funds to buy rice for them to help them survive staying at home at this challenging time.
As of time of writing, we have already delivered 409 sacks of rice for 1,541 family members of displaced workers around Cebu and Manila. They can now survive staying safe at home for at least a month.
Until now, we get a lot of inquiries from displaced workers asking for help for their families every day, especially now that the ECQ is extended. Some of these people literally have nothing to eat anymore, and their children are getting sick, while they feel so helpless to do anything about it. We really want to help more of these people so we would highly appreciate donations from the community. – Contributed
