Okay, I know what’s on your mind: this is sooo gay! But a beauty routine for men could never go wrong. Looking and feeling your best uppers your confidence and will take you places (if you know what I mean!).
Now, you don’t have to wear lipstick or foundation but believe me, there’s nothing sexy in kissing rough lips and running through dandruff-induced hair (ewww!). So, here are some “macho” or (however you may call it to feel manly) tips from us to start your ladies swooning.
1. Taking care of the locks and the scalp- Why is Patrick Dempsey considered McDreamy? Because girls just want to curl their fingers right down to those soft locks. And why is Vin Diesel sexy, even without hair? Because they have that look. And that image. And they didn’t get to that without taking care of their crowning glory. So, yeah, if you don’t want to be mistaken as donning a pigeon’s nest, the hair should never be ignored.
So if you have soft, short hair, you don’t have to do a lot of shampooing. Just a small droplet and you’re good to go. But if you have long hair (with a lot of color treatments, which makes it coarse), you need to make sure that you have the right products to take care of it. Try a conditioner if your hair is thick and dry. TIP for bald men: Avoid using conditioner as it gets the scalp greasy). BONUS TIP: For flakey scalp, switch to dandruff shampoo. Classic Head N’ Shoulders always does the trick.
2. Get the Grime Off- This is a piece of cake, and one you should not forget to eat! DO NOT be astounded with how women does their facial routines. Seriously, we do a lot! But for guys, it can be as simple as washing your face with a gentle facial cleanser. If you are frequently visited by zits and acne, try washing with a wash that has benzoyl peroxide (NEVER prick them). Check out some products that has a men product line. There’s Belo, Neutrogena, Eskinol for Men. There, it’s not hard, right?
Level UP: Men tend to accumulate dirt and grime deep into their facial skin with more strenuous activities. It is hard to get them off with just simple facial washing. Occasional exfoliating should be done to take those dirt and grime off our pores and scrub away dead cells. Once this is done, it will give your face a smoother texture. It also softens hair follicles for a good shave. You can also moisturize after exfoliation (although not a must for men, just an option) for smoother skin.
Good news is that you don’t have to do this every day as daily exfoliation can be tough on your skin. Try around 3x weekly for a good face scrub (like small granules in the wash, it’s pretty awesome once you get the hang of it). One of my friends uses Nivea for Men’s Revitalizing Face Scrub and it really works well for him. That might be a start. You can also experiment with other men scrubs.
ADDENDUM: To protect your face from the harsh rays of the sun, you might also want to put on some sun-block on your face before going out.
It also helps to visit and ask recommendations from a trusted dermatologist on what's best for your skin.
3. Soften those Kissing Gears: The kissing gears are of course, your lips. Your lips are so important from visual to kinesthetic interactions so might as well, give them some love! One tip to improve the feel of the lips is to give them a quick scrub of your soft-bristled toothbrush after brushing. This will slough off dead skin and flakiness due to chapping. Lip Balms are also available to make your lips soft and at the same time, protect them. This should always be handy especially if you are prone to chapping. Just a thin layer would do fine. May we suggest classic flavor for lip balms? They don’t normally smell, no fruity aftertaste, no color and it won’t make you look like you just ate a dozen kilos of lechon.
4. Load up on GH—Growth hormones? Nope, you wish! GH stands for Grooming and Hygiene. And you have to load up some focus on them. We’re not saying that you should invade the parlors and have your perms and mani-pedi sessions daily. But it helps that men give attention to their own hygiene and grooming. Some stuff you should not ignore:
a. Breath: What’s the use of the super soft lips and the smooth skin when your breath stinks? Brush, floss and rinse. This says a whole lot about your personality and the way you take of yourself. You can also opt to whiten teeth, use a set of Crest White Strips after brushing (available at S&R and most online stores).
b. Nails: Both, fingers and toes are often neglected. As I said, no need to get full mani-pedi sessions, just clip your fingernails and toenails when the tips become noticeable. Dirty and long nails are a major turn-off (for both species).
c. Eyes- Morning sunshine is good but morning stars, not that good. Check your eyes in the mirror once in a while. There’s nothing romantic with staring at someone’s eyes, assuming it’s love at first sight when the girl is staring at your morning stars.
d. Nose and Ears: Do you know that the nose and ears are the gateways to your brain? Okay, not really. But boogers on noses and dirty earwax-visible ears are simply gross. If you’ve got some bushy hair pouring out above your lobes and nose, that’s a double eww! You might want to trim those with the proper tools.
MAJOR GROSS ALERT, OFF-TOPIC: In addition, what’s worse than boogers and visible earwax and ear/nose hair? Earwax caught on ear hair and boogers hanging on nose hairs (puke!)
5. The Axe Effect, Sort Of: Ask a bunch of girls on what draws them to men, and it’s that manly scent. Not the sweaty, and stinky ones but those that spell man in every whiff. No wonder Axe has that commercial where girls go frolicking and running after Axe-using men. But don’t rely too much on those commercials (although Axe does have a good product line on scents).
I won’t be recommending perfumes here but there are sure lots that would take your fancy. Try hypo-allergenic products starting with anti-perspirants, after-shaves, etc. Then experiment on men’s perfumes. I’m sure you will pick one that would really match your personality.
