Just like any other appreciation day such as Teacher’s day, Father’s Day and Mother’s Day, there is such a thing as Nurses’ Day too! This celebration was made to appreciate the vital role nurses play in health care.
Often times we look past their impact in society since it’s usually the doctors that get credit in the medical world. Our beloved nurses, however, don’t always gain recognition for the effort and skills they offer for the welfare of the patients.
It all started in 1965 when the International Council of Nurses declared “Nurses’ Day.” The 12th of May is significant to them as it is the birth date of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. In addition, 1974 of January was the year they declared “International Nurses’ Day.”
From then on, each year on the 12th of May, every nurse is entitled to receive a Nurses’ Day Kit prepared by the International Council of Nurses. And this year’s theme for IND is “Nurses: A Force for Change: Improving health system’s resilience.” The kits, together with the poster image of IND contains educational documents that provide guidance on how to achieve equitable access to effective healthcare services which are beneficial to them personally and also the health institutions they belong to.
As a profession, nursing is rated one of the most trusted, hence, they are the ones responsible in evaluating and assessing your treatment, including the monitoring of every patient’s progress. There things nurses do for health care are countless. They spend years studying and developing skills to improve their knowledge on the profession. And for that, they deserve an enormous amount of gratitude.
Nursing requires a lot of physical and emotional strength considering the long shifts they have to take each day, the relationships they build with their patients just to see them helpless and sometimes even pass away, the holidays they spend away from their families just to offer help, these are all extremely tough. They are undeniably selfless for choosing this line of work.
May 12 is an opportunity for us to express our thankfulness for their contribution to our society. A simple gesture can go a long way. Whether it is your favorite nurse who once took care of you, a nurse in the family, or just a random nurse you encounter, do give them a pat on the shoulder and say thank you to them. For them, seeing a patient that is now fully recovered is the best reward already, and they absolutely deserve a day filled with gratitude. Do go over to the hospital and show them that they are appreciated.
