Every day, approximately 830 women die from preventable causes related to pregnancy and childbirth. Ninety-nine percent (99%) of these maternal deaths occur in developing countries, including the Philippines. In a World Health Organization (WHO) survey in 2014, the Philippines ranked 74th among the countries with the highest rate of maternal mortality, out of the 184 countries surveyed.
Obstetrical hemorrhage is responsible for around 25-30% of maternal mortality worldwide, reaching as high as 60% in some countries. Most of these obstetrical hemorrhages occur during labor and delivery, also referred to as Post-partum Hemorrhage (PPH).
PPH is defined by experts as vaginal bleeding in excess of 500ml within 24 hours from delivery. Clinicians around the world recognize that some women who are severely anemic when they give birth will die from hypovolemic Shock before they have lost 500ml of blood.
One of the treatments necessary to prevent maternal death from obstetrical hemorrhage is the transfusion of ample amount of blood to replace what was lost during childbirth and to restore hemodynamic stability.
A Drop of Love...A Night of Music: Save a Mother from Hemorrhage features Jon Joven who will serenade guests with love songs from famous Broadway musicals. The audience will also be entertained by chorale group CIMphony from the CEBU Institute of Medicine, a ballet performance by Cebu Center for Dance and surprise renditions from singing talents among the membership of POGS Cebu itself.
