Die, brod, Die!
THAT DOES IT!

Another young life has been wasted for nothing. An apparent victim of hazing, Cris Mendez was pronounced dead on arrival after he was brought to the Veterans Memorial Medical Center over the weekend. He was recruited to join the Sigmo Rho fraternity in the University of the Philippines. The circumstances surrounding his death remains a mystery, as the doctor, of all people, who brought him to the said hospital, has gone on leave of absence and has turned off his cellphone. A healer, who is probably guilty of complicity in this situation, is now on the run! If ever he is caught or surfaces, his license to practice medicine must be reviewed for possible suspension!
I have never understood this obligatory rite of foolish, violent passage practiced by fraternities. It is juvenile, serves no purpose and is just plain stupid. Add murderous to that list of descriptions. How is brotherhood forged in this fashion? All it does is perpetuate a cycle of violence and a getting-even attitude by those who have gone through it and survived. I got hurt so I have to hurt as well. Sheesh! I have friends with whom I have forged a close relationship sans this rite of passage. Who needs to get hurt just because one wants to join an organization? Are these “frats” training its members to become Jason Bournes? And why even join a fraternity in this fashion? Doesn’t joining a fraternity automatically expose you to unnecessary violence against rival or even just different fraternities, all in the name of brotherhood? This is all part of testosterone arrogance prevalent in people who want to belong, with members bordering on sociopath behavior.
And what is the state university doing about this? Has it given tacit approval to all the fraternities on campus to conduct hazing, specifically brutal hazing that leads to death? How many more young lives is the university going to see snuffed out beneath its very noses? And this is not even an isolated case. Remember the young law student who died at the hands of his law school “brods”? Aspiring lawyers who break the law. How admirable! And now, according to a well-known alumnus of the Sigma Rho, its hierarchy of values is as follows – God, country, university and fraternity. Well now, where was their God while Cris Mendez was being subject to gratuitous violence? How does this act give anything to the country? All it did was to give shame to the university once again, and condemnation towards the fraternity. So much for this hierarchy! We can only hope that justice be finally given to Cris and his family. And that the perpetrators are made to pay for this. Perhaps those found guilty should suffer the same fate as Cris, beaten to death!
