Thumbs down Erap on MILF: Only all-out war will work

    (The Philippine Star) | Updated January 28, 2015 - 12:00am
MANILA, Philippines - Manila Mayor Joseph Estrada said yesterday that only an all-out war against the Muslim rebels could solve the secessionist problem in Mindanao.
Estrada told The STAR that peace negotiations with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) are doomed to fail because the government cannot trust the rebels.

He said the killing of over 40 members of the police Special Action Force (SAF) after a clash with combined forces of the MILF and the Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters (BIFF) in Mamasapano, Maguindanao last Sunday is an indication that the rebels are not serious about ending the conflict in Mindanao.

Estrada said that when he was president one of the primary reasons he declared an all-out war against the MILF was because he could not trust the secessionist group.

“The only solution there is an all-out war. During my time as president, I engaged the MILF with peace talks, ceasefire, peace talks, ceasefire. But what happened, they continue to create havoc in Mindanao. The MILF is already 40 years and it will never stop,” he said.

Estrada said that the government has not been remiss in its duty to offer its hands for peace, “but the peace offering of the government has not been reciprocated” by the rebel group.

He said this bloody incident would lead to another travel advisory from other countries to warn foreigners not to visit the Philippines.

He asked the people to just pray that the Aquino administration would be able to succeed in its peace talks with the MILF.

Senate Majority Leader Alan Peter Cayetano warned the government that it must not negotiate with the MILF from a point of weakness.

Cayetano, who withdrew his support for the proposed Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL), said that the government should never allow anyone to get away with murder, regardless of the fact that the peace process with the MILF could be at stake.

Sen. Joseph Victor Ejercito had also withdrawn his co-authorship of the proposed BBL.

Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr., chairman of the Senate committee on local government, has suspended the hearings of his panel regarding the BBL until the MILF explains its side on the encounter.

The House ad hoc committee on the BBL has also decided to suspend discussions on the measure’s provisions pertaining to national defense and public order following the clash.

Cagayan de Oro Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, chairman of the ad hoc committee, said discussions on the four key issues would not be resumed until the concerned agencies report to the panel.

Senate President Pro-Tempore Ralph Recto assailed the MILF for allegedly harboring Malaysian terrorist Zulkifli bin Hir, alias Marwan, and his local cohort Basit Usman that were the targets of the police operation in Maguindanao.

Recto said if it is true that the MILF is harboring them, they should surrender Marwan and Usman to the authorities.

Malacañang appealed to lawmakers yesterday to consider the adverse consequences of giving up on the peace process with the MILF at this time.

“While recognizing the challenges posed by the violent incident in Mamasapano, it is important to keep in mind the vital objective of attaining long-term peace, stability and progress in Mindanao,” said Presidential Communications Operations Office Secretary Herminio Coloma Jr.

    Calls for peace
Chief Justice Ma. Lourdes Sereno has called for sobriety in the wake of the deadly clash between SAF and MILF rebels in Maguindanao.

In a rare statement issued yesterday, the Supreme Court chief also opposed calls for war pending a government investigation on the incident that killed 44 policemen. –

=> Wla ni xa nalipong? For as long as I can remember, his Presidency did nothing to improve the economy which lead to the dollar spiking up to 40; with the effects of non-action overlapping into the GMA presidency spiking the dolar to 55 or 56.

And the all our war he then provoked the MILF and Abu-sayaff, with his famous "huwag niyo akong subukin?!" That is nothing but utter nonsense.Working for peace is also a lost cause. Giving them a country of their own? Will result in MORE kidnappings to fund and finance their own would-be lazy government. A lot of these extremist Muslims who think that leading the people of Alah should be by the barrel of a gun, need to be re-educated about the ways of Islam because violence is and was never of his teachings.

i try og re educate ang uban muslims sa kaning mga lugara....

Where the Muslims are not happy:

    They're not happy in Gaza.
    They're not happy in Egypt.
    They're not happy in Libya.
    They're not happy in Morocco.
    They're not happy in Iran.
    They're not happy in Iraq.
    They're not happy in Yemen.
    They're not happy in Afghanistan.
    They're not happy in Pakistan.
    They're not happy in Syria.
    They're not happy in Lebanon.
    They're not happy in Indonesia.

    So, where are they happy?

    They're happy in Australia.
    They're happy in England.
    They're happy in France.
    They're happy in Italy.
    They're happy in Germany.
    They're happy in Sweden.
    They're happy in the USA.
    They're happy in Norway.

They're happy in almost every country that is not Islamic!
And who do they blame [for their unhappiness]?

Not Islam...not their leadership...not themselves... They blame the countries in which they are HAPPY! And they want to change the countries in which they're happy, to be like the countries they came from, where they were unhappy.

HELL YEAH! Somebody should start bombing those f*ckers (the extremists)! Erap's offensive against them might have not worked 100%, but it toned them down. And it showed were not MOTHERF*CKING PUSS*ES who would take one up the a*s in the name of peace. Education? Sure, that would work.. in an idealistic perfect world... so good luck with that...

Cant even educate our own people regarding responsible voting...

I dont know if you guys are still able to remember, but at the time of Erap, when he declared war and the army kept on bombing their a*s, they were forced to backtrack to Basilan and Sulo, thats why those islands became like base of operations for them. But then guess what, the war stopped, peace talks became an option, the motherf*ckers became cocky, and a lot of dead soldiers and war torn cities later, this f*cking bureaucrats reject the idea of peace talks coz they think the f*ckers cant be "trusted", go figure. So it juz took a lot of dead soldiers and cops for them to realize that!

this is the reason why erap is no.2 in the last presidential election, don't trust the survey, it's only in Luzon, they didn't include Mindanao..

Erap to govt: Don't trust MILF | ABS-CBN News

    Spoiler!
Speaking to ANC's Headstart, Estrada said the MILF cannot claim that the clash between the MILF members and the elite cops in Tukanalipao village was an "isolated incident", adding that the encounter will affect the ongoing peace talks.

"Yes, this will affect the peace talks. So many lives have been sacrificed. How can this be an isolated incident? They have been doing that for the past how many years. How many towns have been burned? How many people have been killed? We have exhausted all means in making peace with them. What else?" he said.

    Spoiler!
Estrada, however, said the government cannot trust the MILF, noting that the Moro rebel group has a history of breaking their word even while talking peace.

"There was lack of coordination and things like that. You can never trust the MILF and [Moro National Liberation Front]. That is what I believe in...I experienced it," he said.

He said that during his presidency, one of his first statements was that there could be no economic growth without peace and order.

He said that when he first reached out to then MILF chairman Hashim Salamat, the Moro leader said: "If the president wants to see me, he can come here to Mindanao and choose the place, whether in Davao or Zamaboanga City."

"I said to myself: who are you to tell the president where to see you?," Estrada recalled.

Estrada said he gave the MILF a maximum of six months to forge a lasting peace agreement with the government. Peace talks, however, fell apart after the MILF asked for a substate in Mindanao, which Estrada rejected.

The former president said that even during the peace talks, the MILF attacked Kauswagan town in North Cotabato and killed soldiers and even children.

"Six children were burned to death and two soldiers were beheaded. That is the time I put on my fatigue uniform. I went to Kauswagan. I looked at the children and the soldiers and that was when I declared all out war," he said.

Military forces captured 13 major MILF camps including Camp Abubakar during the Estrada presidency. The offensive, however, displaced thousands of civilians who fled the fighting.

Estrada said he turned down a request from then US president Bill Clinton not to declare an all-out war against the MILF, saying the US should not interfere with the internal problems of the Philippines.
