Use whatever works within your budget.

But also depends on your desired output.

I've used tarpaulin, bedsheets, paper, muslim, alphagina, brick walls... all sorts of things with some degree of success.

Just keep in mind that anything which isn't smooth will have texture. Making that work for you can be a hit or miss as it can either add character to the shot or distract the viewer.

Tarpaulin is more durable than paper and can be wiped or even washed clean. But the surface is textured. You could either throw more light on it to wash it out...

...or use shallower depth of fields to blur out the texture of whatever material you're using.

For cloth I prefer to randomly crumple it up rather than fold it. I find it brings out more character.

For paper backgrounds you can go to f8 for Savage brand paper...

For muslim cloth you can go to Photoshop

mas nice ang savage paper pero once ma gisi, hugaw or kumos.... gg.. ang backdrop nga cloth is mas ligon (in terms of dili ma gisi or unsa, ma kumot pwede ra i.plansa, ma laba pa gud if unsa) pero ang photo dili gud as smooth ug flawless as paper, ang buha.ton sa uban kay ang flooring ila i.match ang pintal or naai sila flooring nga similar color para dili ma tumban ug gisi ang papel pero additional nah siya ug investment cost

Muslin Background Cloth 12x16 - Studio & Accessories

You could also start off with fabric stores that sell cloth for curtains and bedsheets.
