    Default Germany needs 300k nurses

SOME 300,000 Filipino registered nurses are needed in Germany, a provincial consultant said.

Herbert Walter, chair of the HDC-German Knowledge Sprachzentrum, a Cebu-based German learning center, visited the Cebu Provincial Capitol yesterday.

Accompanied by Atty. Jonathan Capanas, Capitol consultant on good governance, Walter sought Gov. Hilario Davide III's assistance on the need for more nurses in Germany.

HDC is the only school in Cebu that offers B2 level education for professionals.

There are two more levels below the B2 level, A1 and A2.

A1 and A2 certificates can be given to registered nurses but in order to get a B2 level, the registered nurse must learn the foreign language.

"The requirement is that they should be a registered nurse, and they should acquire the German language. They should undergo training," Atty. Capanas said.

To attain a B2 level certificate, a registered nurse will undergo a training that would last nine to 10 months.

Capanas said a lot of Cebuano nurses already underwent training but could not be deployed because of a coordination problem with the Philippine Overseas Employment Agency (POEA).

The agency is reportedly not ready to deploy nurses in Germany.

Capanas said Cebuano nurses interested in working abroad should coordinate with government agencies like POEA because it is equipped to facilitate work opportunities for Filipinos abroad.

Germany opened job opportunities for Filipinos last year, particularly on the field of health care.

Walter said Germany is running out of nurses and the senior citizen population is increasing.

Walter observed that Filipino nurses are more skilled.

In Germany, nursing is only a three-year course while it is a four-year course in the Philippines.

Walter believes that the extra year is important because of the additional exposure.
