Thread: Turn on HDD?

  1. #1

    Question Turn on HDD?

Naa ko question, aside from electricity savings and heat reduction, will spinning down hard drives (under power management) really increases its mean time before failure? Mas dugay ba maguba ang HDD if cge spin down/sleep mode?

Ako gi huna2x if a mechanical HDD has moving parts, murag mas stressful man cge on and off ang motor/HDD head.

I'm also rather favorable to this...
mura ug sakyanan, mas maau stick ka to 100kmph stable rather than going 20kmph then 100kmph then 20kmph. different machines pero same moving parts..

but i think if you managed to reduce the maximum RPM.. m.help tingale.. pero ang pag.CAP rah..not necessarily of when IDLE

    @ bro Rainerius,

are you referring to Enterprise/ Server grade or consumer (desktop) grade HDDs? bisan asa ana nila, if mag sige'g spin down, head park & others, in actual use, ma lessen ang MTBF value (mean time between failure) nila but it would be a case to case basis... pila ka percent from the original MTBF value? i don't know... hehehe... naa man papers ani nya for comparison sa net. ang MTBF value na gi disclose sa manufacturer kay at normal operation na sya... spin-down, head park & others are included...

i assumed that the HDD(s) that you are referring are used for storage drive...

dili pud nko i-include ang "Green Drives" labi na, himoon sya'g OS drive... mao ni ang maka sikwakoy nya due to the constant mechanical cycle of up then idle... spin-down and head park... then up again...
