for long term career either of this two... php are as good as the current trend... it will die someday.. but ruby and python had been there to stay... why? because python and ruby are not just used in web technologies... being open source, it was adopted on other system also... mainly BSD and Linux... heck python and ruby are slowing creeping in mobile technologies...

i like zend despite a brief engagement with it couple years ago... but php cant be used on desktop nor mobile (maybe now but still not a good idea), however ruby and python have been used in conjunction with other language like C/C++

there is always a certain moment for a programmer/developer to rethink which way to go, either for long-term or trend... web/cloud application is currently the trend and php is one of the famous on the lists, however if you want to have steady career, php is not actually good for long term (IMHO)...

true true! zend is a great framework for bigger projects/sites but not applicable in mobile. Honestly, I want to learn ruby and python but I dont have much time to study about this languages due to lack of time studying zend for it is needed in the company.

can I ask why php is not good for long term?

in PHP the learning curve is very short, you can actually start developing a php site in just a day (given that a person is really interested in learning it), why its not for long term? PHP are limited as web technology, surely there are compiler that can turn PHP into application (like php to exe), beside php has some security holes... facebook maybe built over php, but its not really a pure PHP but rather a modified PHP developed by facebook dev team (HiHop).... big technologies like google are built over python... i think twitter is rails...

NOTE: This comment are based from current trend and the experienced i had when i still code purely PHP but since my long hiatus in the open source world... i have learn that PHP is not really something that i would marry... currently im focusing in python/pyGTK and vala... its leap of fate actually for im venturing in my uncharted water... but it was worth it... with this leap-of-fate i have to stop my freelance work and just keep my day job...
