Royce Gracie made jiu jitsu a level higher in MMA. But i think he's not the greatest gladiator ever, just one of them. Randy Couture can make a big case considering his age, the generation of fighters and UFC rules he has faced, and the 2 weight divisions he has reigned and dominated.

gracie may be great but he's one of the worst strikers and for me, there has to be a balance. couture on the other hand, excels at both striking and grappling. now there's a great.im not saying gracie sucks, i respect the guy espcially the submissions he pulls out of nowhere (awesome stuff) but if only he just trains his stirking. fyi gracie is currently training brock lesnar yeeeaaahh!!!

The way Royce Gracie brought MMA to a greater heights makes him one of the very rare fighters ever. He's not as well rounded and versatile compared to the other fighters but it was him who gave MMA a very good name. Being great is not limited to style, number of victories and even titles won, it's also about how one influences such sport and others to the sport, Gracie did all of them. Gracie has revolutionized MMA. It was because of him that most fighters now train and use ground fighting in MMA matches. He might lose a lot of matches to the modern fighters but for sure, he's got a spot in many MMAers and people's hearts, now that's greatness.
