so i got this 250GB Seagate HDD
i wonder asa na akong 20GB?!
nanu nahimo na mn ug 232.9GB ang max?

As a result, computers see the storage space as:

8 bits = 1byte

1024 bytes = 1 kilobyte (KB)

1024KB = 1 megabyte (MB)

1024MB = 1 gigabyte (GB)

500GB = 536870912000 bytes

But hard disk manufactures follow international system of units (SI). As a result they see:

Kilo = 1000

Mega = 1000000

Giga = 1000000000

500 GB = 500000000000 bytes

Thus, once you put a 500GB hard disk into a computer, it performs following calculations:

500000000000 bytes divided by 1024 = 488281250 KB
488281250 divided by 1024 = 476837 MB
476837 divided by 1024 = 465 GB

To compute your 250GB harddrive, here it is:

250 GB = 250000000000 bytes
250000000000 bytes / 1024 = 244140625 KB
244140625 KB / 1024 = 238419 MB
238419 MB / 1024 = 232.9 GB

sala ni sa marketing. to simplify everything, they just divide everything by 1000. but in reality it should be divided by 1024.

so your 250GB drive is not actually 250GB. it's what stingerray illustrated

1KB = 1024 bytes
1MB = 1024KB or 1,048,576 bytes
1GB = 1024MB or 1,048,576 KB or 1,073,741,824 bytes...
1TB = 1024GB or 1,048,576 MB or 1,073,741,824 KB or 1,099,511,627,776 bytes

Most people think that 1MB = 1000KB, 1TB = 1000GB... its not. So, a 250GB hard disk is 250GB, but when you compute it the right way, 232GB ra. Same with all types of storage. Flash drives, Flash disks (SD, CF, MMC etc), external hard disks, RAM, SSD, cellphone memory... everything.. unless tubig imo gi kwenta then 1000ml = 1Liter. hehehe...
