Default First USB 3.0 enabled DisplayLink adapter arrives

First USB 3.0 enabled DisplayLink adapter arrives by VR-Zone.com

It's taken nearly a year longer than DisplayLink envisaged, but now the first display adapters featuring its new DL-3100 USB 3.0 chips are starting to arrive and first out are Japanese I-O Data. We were expecting a lot of new features from DisplayLink, but it seems like at least the first devices have little new to offer.

Despite the tenfold increase in bandwidth, the highest screen resolution that I-O Data's USB-RGB3/D adapter supports is 2048x1152, although it's entirely possible that this is a limitation because of the use of a single-link DVI port. This seems to defeat the purpose of having all that extra bandwidth available, although we'll wait and see if there will be versions with dual-link DVI or DisplayPort connectivity that will offer higher resolution support in the future.

The joint press release from the two companies doesn't really speak of much else in terms of features, but the device itself sports a micro USB 3.0 port rather than a full size connector. There were also some claims in the press release about higher performance, full-screen HD videos, 3D games and multi-channel audio, although we're not sure exactly how these are applicable, especially the audio part as there's no mention of any kind of audio connectivity. At US$137 (S$179) a pop, this is also a very costly upgrade option over getting a USB 2.0 based adapter, which further makes us wonder what the point of this product really is.
