Buffalo beat Netgear to retail by two days with its 802.11ac router, as by the time you're reading this, Netgear's R6300 802.11ac router should be available in retail, well, at least as long as you live in the US. Not content having one 802.11ac router, Netgear has also announced a second router, as well as – and much more importantly – a USB 802.11ac Wi-Fi adapter. The new router, dubbed the R6200 is as you might've gathered from the model name, the R6300's little brother. Netgear has castrated it on both the 2.4GHz and 5GHz as this is a 2x2 MIMO router, rather than a 3x3 MIMO router and as such it's limited to 300Mbps and 867Mbps respectively. You do at least still get Gigabit Ethernet, but this time around you only get a single USB 2.0 port. These are the only differences we can see based on the very limited specifications provided by Netgear and as such you do at least still get 128MB of RAM and flash memory.
The USB adapter is called the A6200 and if your quick deduction skills have lead you to think that this is also a 300/867Mbps device, then you'd be correct. One major issue here is that the Broadcom chip used is limited to USB 2.0 speeds of 480Mbps, so it'll be interesting to see how the A6200 performs in an 802.11ac Wi-Fi environment, as worst case scenario, the USB 2.0 bus is a bottle neck here. That said, taking network overheads into account, the USB 2.0 bus might not be an actual issue. At least Netgear added a swivel port on the adapter which allows you to position it horizontally and vertically.
