CEBU'S candidates are taking their campaign online to reach out to a new generation of voters who hold accounts on social networking sites.
Cebu Gov. Gwendolyn Garcia’s Facebook account was initially maintained by her Capitol staff but she figured out how to update her account during a trip abroad.
Since then, she takes time to update her account using her cell phone. As of Feb. 5, she already had 546 friends.
Her rival, Liberal Party (LP) standard bearer Hilario Davide III recently began a Facebook account.
Davide's wife Jobel said the former Cebu City councilor is targetting youth voters who come home to the province.
She said their Cebu staff updates the site with her prior approval since her husband is not Internet savvy.
Consolacion mayoralty candidate Ember Alinsug, for his part, said he also has accounts in Twitter, MySpace and Ning to expand his campaign among the youth.
He said his son Coco who worked under former president Fidel Ramos and now works at Harvard University, helps him in his online campaign.
He opened his Facebook account last April.
His online group Consolacionanon and the Youth for Ember Alinsug groups in Facebook are also maintained by his two sons when he is out for his night rallies.
Cebu City Mayor Tomas Osmeña, who is running for Cebu City's south district, has City Hall officials and supporters to maintain his Facebook account.
Cebu City Public Information Officer Nagiel Bañacia said the mayor has 1,443 fans on one page and 491 fans in another page.
His rival businessman Jonathan Guardo personally updates his own account which he opened last year.
“It has increased my number of volunteers. Students invite me to schools to speak...Totally different from the barangay level,” he said. /Reporter Marian Z. Codilla
