President Arroyo on Tuesday offered Cebu City as a venue for six-party talks on North Korea’s nuclear weapons program. The six-party talks bring together North and South Korea, the United States, China, Japan and Russia.
Luis Cruz, Foreign Affairs Assistant Secretary for ASEAN Affairs, said Mrs. Arroyo relayed the offer to the governments of Japan, Russia and the United States. He said the nuclear issue and the stability of the ASEAN region will be discussed in next month’s ASEAN summit.
Pyongyang agreed to return to multi-nation talks, which it had boycotted for a year, after its October 9 underground nuclear test triggered international condemnation and United Nations-backed sanctions.
The international community has repeatedly called on North Korea to abandon its nuclear weapons program.
Pyongyang, however, insists that its weapons programs have no hostile intent and are only meant as a deterrent against external attacks.
