THE Commission on Elections yesterday barred actor Richard Gomez from running in the fourth congressional district of Leyte because he lacked the required one-year residency.
The commission also dismissed from government service Maguindanao election supervisor Lintang Bedol who had gone into hiding after being accused of poll manipulation in his area of supervision during the 2007 elections.
In a resolution written by chairman Jose Melo, the Comelec en banc ordered its law department to file criminal charges against Bedol.
The resolution said Bedol failed to “live up to the norms of conduct required of a public officer to exercise the highest degree of professionalism and commitment to public service.”
The Comelec first division said in a ruling that Gomez did not reside in Ormoc City for a year prior to filing his certificate of candidacy.
Buenaventura Juntilla of Barangay Libertad in Ormoc City asked the Comelec to disqualify Gomez who is a resident of East Greenhills in San Juan and not in Carlotta Hills, Ormoc City.
Gomez’ legal counsel, Raymond Cajucom, said his client would appeal the ruling and expressed hope he would emerge victorious in the end.
The actor lost his bid for a senatorial seat in the 2007 elections A few years earlier, his party-list group failed to win accreditation.
The Comelec also threw out the disqualification case against Pasay City Mayor Peewee Trinidad for lack of merit.
