    Default some ph-photo stories

    Hi to all istorya photographers,

I know that some of you received ph photo emails regarding a certain Mr. Dasa and the commotion that followed. I was one who commented against some of their insults but they moderated my comments as it were not to their best interest. I'm sending excerpts of their comments together with my letters. Please remove if you feel na dili ni maayo but please comment if you feel na naa pud ko point. Thanks

This was Mr. Dasa's answer when they insulted him on his first offer:
"For those who are interested to cover a two(2)days seminar event, i've raised the fee, P1,250/day.
    Transportation expenses will be refund.
For those who are against the offer, you have your own petty rubbish opinion which doesnt effect anything.
Unless you show me a good event photography cover sample, i may consider some negotiable benefits to
    the interested person"
p.s.: Losers always complain. Winners always get the rewards. which one are you?

These are some of the posts as answer to Mr. Dasa's reaction:
"dude, we spend thousands of hard earnd money buying our equipment, our recovery strategy for getting our money back does not include taking on Php1,250 a day jobs"
"Ok. This has gone too far. You're asking to be flamed. I'll do you one better. This person's posts have now been put on moderation mode"

    My first letter:

    Hi to all,

I hope that this letter goes through or approved by the moderator

In my humble opinion, there is nothing wrong with Mr. Dasa as you can tell at the end of this letter that there are a lot of dudes just like him.

I think there is something missing on how we present ourselves especially the term "professional photographer". Personally, I never used the word and preferred "photography" plainly as its meaning suggests. I think all photographers like us using even the cheapest of 35mm film cams are professional photographers. As we can all define: a professional photographer is a dude with a camera who charges money on his photo services, right? So how are we different from the manongs standing all day outside churches? How can we charge the price we ask based on the capital we spent when 80 percent of the Filipino people are too hard up to even afford one lousy 5r graduation print made by "luneta" photographers? How can we prove to the world that just because we use a dslr, we can already do photography? How do we differentiate ourselves from "cheap professional photographers" - as to the size of our pockets; or the size of our businesses; or maybe the size of our heads?

"Photography" is an art. It was and always will be. This classification sets us well above any other "professional" photographer. For me all our equipment no matter how extensive or expensive are just tools to make our images. Great artistic images no matter if it is from an event, from a stolen snapshot or from a travel - will always stand out as a work of art.

I'm 42 years old and I'm an artist. At present, I slide between painting, photography and digital art - to earn a living and to survive. Five years ago, I sold art (mostly paintings) and had a gallery at one posh hotel here in Cebu. I can't remember a day when somebody just like Mr. Dasa drop by the exhibit and make some true-for-them-comment: "ba't ang mahal, magkano bang capital mo sa painting at sa frame?", "di ba ang oil paint eh tag P400 lang ang set sa bookstore?", "grabe namang raket 'yan, ang mahal eh kaya ko namang gumawa nyan any time!". In spite of all the low comments, we still sold enough to live a life much better than most of our countrymen. At present I'm selling stock photos, and digital art/photography prints to a worldwide market. I own 2 dslr's/4 lenses, 2 p&s, 2 laptops, 3 power p.c.'s, misc. equipment, 27 domain names and 5 websites. In theory, I would never sell my works lesser than my asking price. But in the real world, I don’t sell that good each day or each month. So during bad times, I would readily sell to any Mr. Dasa - just to get by and work again another day. An answer to a question: under a circumstance (like when I'm broke and have nothing else to do) I'd do Mr. Dasa's offer without talk, shame nor regret (earn a friend or suki and maybe have lots of Indian food - I'll even use a 30d. People like Mr. Dasa don't distinguish a "professional" photographer from all the other photographers - again the manongs of luneta, the news photographers we see on TV each day using all the latest dslr (most of which earn far less than Php1,250/day), the rich kids in the mall using the latest digicams, the foreign tourists bringing an array of digital equipment. As for "professional photographers", yes its true - any dude or any small company can buy any dlsr anytime, and can be a real threat to our "thriving professional photography business", they can even subscribe to forums, insult 'cheapies' like our Mr. Dasa and call themselves " expensive professional photographers" or perhaps "special professional photographers". Or maybe “licensed professional photographers"? Hehehe! All that Mr. Dasa asked is a little help and a good enough service at a price they can shell out.

Lastly, there will always be a lot of Mr. Dasa but there will still be people who understands and respect the work we do - at the price we ask - if we show them that we are different and that we do "photography" in a level much better than the rest. Throughout history, people always see the art before the artist - even if he is filthy rich and proud.

    Good day!

They didn't publish this comment. Then I sent 2 more and heres a copy of one:

This was a comment related to the bench show:
“I hate to be blunt, but daniel's example is not because of a fellow professional offering free, but more on amatuer photographers with raging hormones that would prefer to get in to those events for free, near the stage, without thought on what he is doing to the industry”.

This is about the plan to cartelize fees and list all photo practitioners:
“How will these amateurs and beginners learn the tricks of the trade if the professionals will just sit down and do nothing”?
"These mistakes can be somewhat avoided if we have some organization that will stand to guide them right from the start"

    My letter:
Hi to all. I wish you could somehow get the balls and publish my comments. Although the site is yours, the internet is still public and suppressing important opposing ideas only means that you’re biased and afraid.

We all need the bread. I'm not that least hypocritical especially when it comes down to the money part. But I’m not at all greedy when it involves doing what I like to do. Yes I’m very sure a lot of you “professional photographers” are threatened by “younger”, “amateur” or “beginners” getting on in the act. And yes these “beginners” can have much better gear than you guys (I hope you’re’ not shivering in fear) and much more NEW talent. And a big yes, none of these dudes will join any one of your “professional” group.

I do hope you stop belittling us “amateurs”. I also hope you stop mocking “luneta” type photographers. 20 years ago, I worked as one just to survive. You keep on screaming on professionalizing the “professional photographer” industry but aren’t you just trying to protect your “thriving professional photographer business” and trying your hardest to monopolize the industry to make people believe in your shit longer?

All around the country, artists and enthusiast are gearing up with the latest dlsr’s. The video, wedding and event people are expanding and buying top-of-the-line equipment. The rich kids and yuppies are digi-gearing with the latest mall finds. In 5–10 years it gets worst for you when sensors and lenses become much sophisticated that anyone can better everything you can possibly do at the click of a button. And most P&S will be as good and powerful as a dlsr. Computer software can process images faster, better and easier so anyone can have “professional photographer” quality or better at the click of the mouse. It will just be a matter of business strategy and I’m sure a lot of new businesses will be hitting you head-on. What do you do? Still wanna place that sign “licensed professional photographer” over your heads? Hehehe!

I'm sorry if I sound too mean. Wala lang personalan but a lot of you pissed me off with what you did with the bombay and your comments regarding us "amatuers"

    Good day!

frankly, people sometimes have to get their heads out of their bums. just because they spent hundreds of thousands of pesos in equipment they start to think all high and mighty, and belittle "amateurs" or "beginners", but ask them what have they done they start scratching their heads.

this is the main reason why i don't participate in discussions regarding fees and how much fees should be given for your work. why can't people just shut up and ignore the post if they don't like it? i agree with you about getting work done just to get by. heck, i remember doing a shoot for only 1k and now that client is a suki. if you don't like the offer, simply say "no, thanks" and move on. there is no need to berrate the poster or the client.

I do not know Mr. Daza (a foriegner looking for cheap photo service) nor I know the people behind ph-photo. I subscribe to it because there are a lot of good info for "amatuers" like me. Two days ago, my email was flooded by this Mr. Dasa thing and I tried to comment but what pissed me off was that they moderated me because I took the side of the bombay and the "amatuers".

    bai, it is cheap.

but what I read between the lines of succeeding posts are:

racism, belittlement (sa binisaya pa nakaminus), politics, business monopoly, etc.

what i wrote have meanings between the lines too and its just fine with me because I know there are a lot of dudes that share the feeling.

    thanks pnoize, tolstoi, anakin

i agree with adjong, the rate is cheap. too cheap.

rates like these ruin the industry. 2k for 2 days work? whoever took this job must be either really in need of money or uses a point and shoot film camera

however, i still do not see what the fuss is all about.
