Origin vs. Evolution
The breed originally known as the Staffordshire Bull Terrier, bred for the sole purpose of dogfighting...
The breed known for its legendary "gameness" and untiring tenacity in the Pit, arenas for which dog fighting are held... Never to back down, never to cower...
Highly dog aggressive is the nature of the breed... Yet SO HUMAN TOLERANT, IT WOULDN'T BITE A HUMAN'S HAND IN THE HEAT OF COMBAT when both combatants are to be separated... This trait was bred into the breed to protect handlers and referees from getting bit. The breed was created to be the ultimate gladiator, but never to harm a human, thus the breed was never meant to have any human aggression.
Originally a medium size dog, you cannot measure a heart of a Pit...
Then a few of these dogs were brought to the United States and had increased in frame...
The AKC (American Kennel Club) refused the registry of the breed because it had no written standard; physical criteria that a breed should posses... The UKC (United Kennel Club) was created solely for this breed, and as the years went on, a standard was written for the breed and adopted by the UKC
Now known as the American Stadfforshire Bull Terrier... Recognized as a separate breed by the AKC... These so called Amstaffs which had been developed as to be recognized by the AKC had been bred for the purpose of conformity and companionship.
It wasn't until in the late 19th Century that dogfighting was outlawed. Some of the original lines are still developed today with it's original gameness intact...
Now comes the development of
the American Bully... A new name. A spinoff, or should we say, the EVOLUTION of the breed...
Developed by pioneer breeders such as Dave Wilson of Razor's Edge and Richard Barajas with the Notorious Juan Gotti of Gottiline...
These new "Pits" had a bigger, bulkier head. Protruding cheek structure. Bigger, bulkier bodies with immense muscle mass and defined musculature. Thicker and stockier limbs...
Also much of the breed's dog aggression had somewhat been bred out...
American Bully aficionados insists that these Bullies are the evolution of the original Pits and have payed homage to the original breed for which their designer dogs had been developed...
For more than 70 years, those breeders had continued to develop these dogs and the breed had changed in appearance and temperament throughout the years... But deep within all American Bullies lies the heart and gameness of the tenacious PIT BULL TERRIER...
