RYAN CAYABYAB TO SIT AS JUDGE ON ABC 5'S 'PHILIPPINE IDOL'

MANILA, March 18, 2006 (BULLETIN) We heard that the maestro, Ryan Cayabyab is confirmed to be sitting as one of the judges in the Philippine version (billed "Philippine Idol") of the worldwide talent search phenomenon "American Idol" which is targeted to air starting July of this year on ABC 5.

However, names of the other two judges who will be sharing the chores with Ryan, along with the host of the show, are yet to be determined. ABC 5, which bagged the rights for the production and airing of the said show in the Philippines, is tight-lipped about the possible choices. We have learned that even recommendations made by the network have to pass the scrutiny of the international producers before they can be officially proclaimed here.

The international producers are said to be a little strict about who will be chosen in the panel of judges. Each member must undergo an intensive seminar-training to determine the kind of "act" that they will put on the show. "Hindi ito yung tipong magsasalita lang sila kung ano ang gusto nila sabihin. They will be given guidelines so that when they sit there as a judge and give their two cents’ worth for every contestant. The objective is for the judge to not at all come out na gusto lang nilang magtaray," the source told us.

It was also revealed to us that it has become a concern whether the Filipino audience would be ready to embrace a Simon Cowell character on the show’s local production, but ABC 5 is banking on the foolproof formula of success of its predecessors around the world. "ABC 5 will simply tap on the experiences of the countries that mounted this show before us. We’re in the business of producing a worldclass talent search here, we’re not just copying a format," the source said.

Don't we have enough of these karaoke singing contest shows on local TV already? Why do we need another one?

This is a risk taken by ABC network. I dont know if this will hit the Filipino audience knowing the existence of two giant networks... Hope the best for ABC...

i agree. ABC is slowly getting into the scene. nindot sad kaayo ilang signal diri sa Cebu sa channel 6 on free tv, mas tin-aw pa kay sa ABS.
