Cebu’s POF triumphs
CEBU ended a 15-year drought in Judo, while a lean team of the city’s best footballers showed that when it comes to youth football, Cebuanos are one of the best in the country.
Joaquin Nicolo Fernandez won Cebu’s first national gold in Judo in the Philippine Youth Games, while brother Vicente and Allan Antigua took home a silver and a bronze in the Philippine Olympic Festival (POF).
Noted youth football coach, Glen Ramos, also added another national title to his cap after his Don Bosco College (DBC)-led squad defeated Iloilo, the country’s acknowledged hotbed of the sport in a climactic final to nail the crown.
Cebu provided the yard stick for youth football in the tournament as it only allowed one goal in all of their games.
Don Bosco got the chance to represent Cebu after topping the local eliminations.
However, for the regional and national matches, Ramos decided to beef his DBC squad with three from Cebu International School, two from Springdale and one each from Sacred Heart School-Jesuit, Abellana National School and Center for International Education.
As is the hall mark of a champion, Ramos drilled teamwork and discipline to the team through extensive training and perfect practices.
And the result in their six wins in the national finals says it all.
They drilled Masbate, 5-1, trampled Paranaque, 8-0, blanked Bukidnon, 2-0, walked over Quezon City, 10-0, and overthrew the defending champion Davao, 3-0, in the semifinals.
The finals against Iloilo epitomize the struggles the team had to overhaul.
Last-minute
Three players, Karl Arcenas (Springdale), Tom Booth, (CIS) and Mikko de Guzman (DBC) played key roles in the final goal, painting the unique setup of the team. And the goal was scored in the final seconds, mirroring the team’s almost last-minute departure for the tournament.
Aside from the three players, the other members of the team are DBC's Leonard Tan, Charles Caballes, Christian Noel,Peter Ricamora, Winrich Baclay, James Nacorda, Angelico Ramirez, Robert Gealon, Miguel Caindec,Springdale's Kenneth Young and Joshua Cruz, CIS' Thomas Booth, Emmanuel and Emilio Cunningham, ANS' Prince Antony SHS-J's Carl Arcenas and CIE's Jules Villahermosa Midfield CIE.
"We are super elated at the team’s victory as national champions. Even in a very short notice, we were able to send a team thanks to the support of Veco who bankrolled the trip," Cebu City Councilor Sylvan Jakosalem said.
The short notice refers to the team’s departure, not their preparation. No ill-prepared team can play, and win, six football matches in a week.
Because of their feat, team will be feted in the Cebu City Charter Day.
The trophy was also another welcome addition to Ramos, a former national team member. Ramos also won the 1996 Coke-Go-For Goal 16-Under championships, with some of the members of that team helping train the kids, and also won the Palarong Pambansa title in 2000.
Meanwhile, the judo team also brought pride to Cebu in the second POF when they won silver and a bronze medal and in the PNYG, where they got Cebu’s first gold in 15 years.
Vicente Fernandez III took home the silver in the 60-kilo and Under weight division and Allan Antigua got the bronze in the same weight class.
Both Fernandez III and Antigua are students of lawyer Vicente Fernandez in the Cebu City Judo Club, which practices at the in Cebu City Sports Center. Enting is also the the coach and teacher of the UC judo club and teaches judo in Doce Pares.
The team, which was also backed by Veco, also took a gold medal in the PNYG after Joaquin Niccolo Fernandez ruled the 55-kilo and Under Class.
This is the first time they won in a national competition since 1992. Antigua also added a silver medal in that same tournament.
Financial constraints limited the Cebu Judo Club to send only four players for the event, but the lean squad still managed to deliver. (EKA)
