The title of this thread is misleading... Perhaps it's a reference to the possibility of America being downgraded to being "only" the second largest economy in the World, after being the largest and most prosperous for so many decades. China's vast wealth is controlled by its gov't, and represents only a tiny fraction of the income earned by the rest of the country. Their overall standard of living is not reflected in the enormous net wealth of the gov't... Their situation is not necessarily one to be envious of. Ask the average person living in China if they feel as wealthy as the rest of the world is portraying them to be.. Oh wait.. They aren't allowed access to foreign news because they are not a free society. So does one rate a country's wealth and position in the world based solely on its financial wealth? What price do you place on being free?

If America was likened to a former superpower, it would be a Britain. The difference is, the American economy is still going to be huge while the Brits will never get their colonies back.

As for China ... whether they like it or not, if they want to lead the world economically, they will need to lead the world in more ways than they have been. As they grow bigger, governments and businesses will realize that they would rather do business with the US. As their people grow richer, they will demand more rights. They will demand more accountability from their government's actions. In the long run, they will be just like the US ... with one big difference ... their population will be their ultimate downfall. It won't happen tomorrow. It won't happen in decades ... but mark my words ... it will happen. We go into a future with less and less for more and more people and the bigger you are, the harder you will fall.
They're also implying about the "balance of power". China is a potential superpower and the current state of the U.S economy would dictate that it can no longer maintain it's status as the world's most powerful country.

And about the well-being, what we see in the U.S now will reflect America's failure as it's economy is heading for another disaster. Too much spending from the government and too much foreign debt will mean lesser quality of living for Americans in the long run. AFAIK rasad na. hehehe.

Only a matter of time til China regained her position as the world's top dog. Though it did take a major revamp of culture and traditions plus some centuries. More empires have lasted on top longer than America so it comes as a surprise. Both the British and Roman empires started declining when they over expanded. America seems to be headed that very same direction.

And when things eventually start getting worse for the Americans, I see America being the aggressor in future conflicts and not China. The overfed fat/obese Americans have been spoiled by their federal government for far too long. Future resentment will come from Americans as they wake up to the realization that $4 Mcdonald meals now cost $30.

In a few years the best things will be made in China similar to how cars were in Japan when WW2 ended. It's about time they start teaching Mandarin in our public schools. How else are we going to find work in the call centers of the future?

I think US will not only drop to number two, but further below... The least bad scenario will be US stuck at number two.... The problem US is facing is very alarming and it is multifold.... Inflation will surely rise as the country tries to increase printing of currency, the increasing geriatric population would overload SSS and medicare, shrinking of the middle class deprives the government of income taxes... job loss is greater than job created.... I do agree with you that being a number 1 economic country doesn't necessarily reflect a improved lifestyle of its citizens, but the control of power will always be shifted towards the one with the most wealth....

I don't think China will last either. Their "One Child Policy" sealed the fate of the Chinese economic machine. China will get old before it gets rich. Social Welfare will be a big burden since in the future, Chinese oldies will outnumber their young and strong middle-class. That's the mistake if we try to suppress the population, in the long-run, it will all come back to us.

Inflation is a problem everywhere. It isn't a deadly disease. I don't agree with your assessment that the USA will spiral downward and then what? Disappear from the planet? You don't believe that the economic problems facing the US will be resolved eventually? You underestimate the tenacity of the American people, friend. All economies face challenges at one time or another, and the US is no exception. Who would have thought that Japan would be able to bounce back after WWII's devastation? And yet, they managed to become a financial super economy within a matter of a few decades. Granted, there are numerous challenges facing the USA.. The gov't needs to reign in spending, cut free financial aid to all foreign countries (loan it, don't just give it), seal its borders, and focus its sights on internal issues that benefit the country. Start drilling and tapping into the vast deposits of crude oil located within its boundaries, tell OPEC to jump into their vast dried up riverbeds (they will soon be buying their fresh water from America), and get back to the business of manufacturing high quality goods to sell to the rest of the world...

In contrast, the way of life in China pales by comparison. Hearing people suggest that we start learning Mandarin only shows me that there are some people who are open to allowing such domination by another culture so new to the superpower scene. The int'l business world adopted English as its language of choice a number of years ago. The vast majority of scientific date found on the internet is in English. Very difficult to envision the rest of the world bending over to accomodate China's language of preference should they assume the coveted #1 position...

i will really be glad if ever it would happen the way you said it.... But the economic challenges of US is continuously going down after it removed the Gold standard in their money... This predicament of US has been already predicted as far from the warning of Ex-president Jimmy Carter, 3-4 decades ago... That was the time when US was the sole superpower as all other nations were still trying to get back from WW2... It is the complacency of the American people that gave way for greedy bankers to control politics... US will lose so much face if ever it will start digging its own oil, afterall they are the ones leading the move against climate change.. I don't see Opec countries buying fresh water (you mean potable water?) as they are already purifying their own water from the sea.... expensive but that's why they are also slowly detaching their dependency on income from oil alone.... It is a nightmare for many Americans right now since they are used to the complacent, materialistic life, credit here and there, entertainment-centered life.... I saw in youtube, there was a speaker decades ago who predicted that the leaders of corporations in America are purposely dumbing its own people so that their focus only is to have a complacent life free of worries and leave the control of the country to the Business World...

Well said Bro. My nephew arrived from the States before the Holy Week and we had a long discussion about the current state of affairs in the USA. He outlined to me a dim future for the country. He confirmed to me that some small time bankers in the midwest have already packed up and left for greener pastures in Asia where they transferred their bread and butter. I think what I saw on one of BBC's Hardtalk interview with a banker had come to reality that 20 years from now, Canada would be better off than the US. Karon lang gani mas taas ang exchange rate sa Canadian dollar kay sa US.
And yes, both of you have the same words about a typical american's insatiable appetite for material needs and endless, unwise spending.
