What will happen once the BPO industry begins to falter, for example due to regulatory barriers (if the U.S. enacts laws taxing or restricting outsourcing)? That would be a catastrophe for our economy...

It's much better to focus on a broad-based education that allows people to work in any industry should they wish to. That's what all the rich countries have done in order to get rich. Look at nursing students now.. there are too many of them so they are being taken advantage of by hospitals and made to work for no pay. What will happen if demand for nursing slows down abroad, or much worse if competition from other countries starts to increase for the few jobs that are left?

It was the same situation when I was studying college and IT was the "in" degree, everyone was signing up to IT whether or not they were really interested. Then when they graduated, the IT industry had a huge decline and a large number of graduates remained unemployed for years as a result.

We should encourage people to study what they are interested in and do the hard work of creating the necessary support to enable a wide variety of businesses and not limit ourselves to BPOs as that would be like putting all your eggs in one basket.
i know what you mean, but i believe you're not getting my point. when i say education, that provides students the opportunity to work for such industries, is same as saying you have given them the option to work for those companies, should they choose to.

besides, another thing you have to understand is what a BPO is. just take the O and you'll get what i mean.

OUTSOURCING. whatever kind of industry, whatever kind of job, when you say it's BPO, it's a task, a function of a division, or even a considerable part of the company's activities being assigned or given to another company to do, in their behalf. i can't go any simpler than that.

means to say, you're not limiting it to call centers, not even solely on customer interaction. think bout it. any kind of industry, wanting to cut costs, getting another company to do the job for them. this covers most, if not ALL kinds of industries.

so, whether a student is geared to learning "things" useful for BPOs or not, they're still being equipped for the real world of employment and entrepreneurship.

    imho
