If local community dancers truly want to survive and become profitable, they are better off quitting their entertainment careers, go back to school and finish, and then apply for office jobs like many others. To make a living out of entertainment is pretty much hopeless, and Cebu's entertainment industry is never lucrative, nor does it serve as a strong economic sector.

Oh yes, local audiences remember stars but often forget local entertainers.

Imagine appearing like that in revealing costumes, and dancing in front of many people all for just P285 per day.

Sad but true, Cebu's local entertainers are not worthy of being called "world-class", simply because they never achieved anything great on the international level.

Even local columnist Sam Costanilla acknowledged the poor state of provincial showbiz, not to mention the continuing trend of teenagers dropping out of school just for the sake of showbiz.

SPOTLIGHTER Dina Layam of Aznar road e-mailed her thoughts regarding some high school students who quit school in favor of show business. She wrote that she has a neighbor, a 15-year-old student, who stopped going to school simply because of her passion in dancing. Dina added that the student and some of her friends, who are also dropouts, formed a cultural dance troupe. They hope to get hired by event organizers and two major television networks.

DINA added: “Pursuing one’s dream is good but in my honest opinion, doing it at the expense of education is not only wrong but also highly immoral and irresponsible. As for Cebuano showbiz, there is really no industry existing (the Visayan rock band scene is an exception). Shows featuring cultural dancing are not abundant and the take-home pay never reaches P1,000. Even dancing on local television attracts a non-existent audience.

THIS writer agrees with Dina’s observation that with the poor health of Cebuano showbiz, it’s best for high school students to stay away from that “industry” and stay in school instead. She also asked them to be vigilant about dishonest talent agents and show organizers who will no doubt exploit their ignorance and weakness.

Local entertainers also have themselves to blame - dropping out of school for the sake of showbiz, living with the delusion that they will become millionaires through dancing or singing, etc. Among the worst cases, some of them go down in the social level and even add to Cebu's prostitution industry where they find work as dancers in nightclubs, as massage "therapists", and streetwalkers.
