Default Best Way to Teach Literature

I am an English teacher in a private school. I'm currently looking for ways to improve my craft..I love reading a lot and has shared the same passion with my students..However, there are times that I needed to resort to all sorts of techniques just to persuade them to read.. I was hoping there is someone out there, who is a teacher too, who could help me improve my craft..Day by day, I'm running out of ideas..thanks!!!

Hi Shey, are you teaching elementary or high school or college-level students?

You might want to know that the film which friedrich_solitaire recommended, perhaps in jest: "The Reader", starring Ralph Fiennes and Kate Winslet, is RATED R due to delicate scenes where the protagonist, a high school boy, has a sexual relationship with an older woman.

    Just a heads up.

Though I'm not a teacher of literature, I am its persistent student. What I'd like to humbly suggest is help your students become aware of and enjoy the different genres in literature that are now considered classics. Like sample works from Robert Howard, HP Lovecraft, Ray Bradbury, HG Wells, O. Henry et cetera, particularly their short stories which I think is can serve as suitable appetizers to the unlimited buffet that is Literature.

invite a writer or poet to speak to your students.

just recently i had the chance to meet a palanca awardee for poetry and that inspired me somehow. might work on your students.

thank you for the info on the film..I haven't checked it out yet but I will keep your warning in mind.. I'm currently having classics as the theme for my home readings yet I noticed that they still are not interested into reading..They take it as a chore, just something they had to get over with as part of the requirement..thank you once again..Would love to meet a literature enthusiast like you......by the way, I'm teaching high school students...
