Default Occultation of the Planet Venus by the Moon, May 16, 2010

A lot of people might have seen the nice image of the Crescent Moon and a bright "star" tonight (Sunday, May 16, 2010). Little do people know that that bright star is actually the planet Venus. And not only is it a pretty sight with Venus hanging above the crescent moon, because the moon is in fact about to SWALLOW the planet Venus. Yes, an occultation is basically a mega-eclipse...the moon will HIDE Venus.

The following are a series of photos I took between 7:22PM and 7:39PM tonight, which documents the event...

7:22 PM, building in foreground is "The Walk" at IT Park

    7:26 PM

    7:30 PM

    7:36 PM

7:37 PM First contact! Venus is now slowly sinking into the dark disc of the moon!

7:39 PM...no more Venus! It's behind the moon now...

I have a video of the actual moment that the Planet Venus disappears or "winks out"...will post here in a bit after I upload it to YouTube.

hi rodion, if only i still have my bridge camera the canon sx10is with 80x zoom...

i was just using a cheap telephoto lens in this. the 500mm to 1000mm are ideal ones.

anyway, i just love to see the two heavenly bodies(i only know now that it was venus, i thought a star >.< ... most of my neighbors went out and saw^^). glad there is science section which i love to frequently visit!

    thank you.

Yes and diba the SX10is has video? You could have captured the moment of occultation (ang pag-disappear sa Venus, like in my video) in 80x full glory But still, there will always be a next time

BTW, sa katong mga nasuko/nanlagot nako, nga wala ko nag-warn or inform about this event, honestly I totally forgot about it, just got reminded of it on Facebook mga 20 minutes before the event, and I could not post anything in the internet kay nag-uli pa ko sa boarding house to get my tripod Sorry, next time I'll be more vigilant of events.
