Some people tend to dislike, despise or even fear the concept of something being "meaningless". I for one see it as merely me having the ability of
choice or having "more
options".
Take this scenario for instance. A religious man preaches to another man that if he does anything evil, he will sin and go to hell when he dies. So he preaches that the "meaning of life" is to do good and avoid evil. Now if the man listening to the religious man, develops a fear of this concept of "hell after death", then his options in life are now fewer than the options he had before the religious man told him about this. From my vantage point, his freedom has been curtailed--his freedom is now less, in a sense, and this narrowing down of his choices in life was done by just another man who merely had ideas in his head. To further worsen the situation, this man now has the potential to stop thinking (and rationalize) for himself anymore, and just rely on the "rules" that this doctrine (i.e. of doing good and avoiding evil) entails. The danger now is, if this religious man keeps doing this, not only to one individual, but thousands or millions of people, he now has the power to shape the destiny of an entire society, through "rules" he has created. But it would be a mistake to assume that his "way" or method is "right" or "moral" or "good"...for he is but only another man with ideas in his head.
