I had experience this before with a client who insisted to buy parts from different vendors and have it assembled and this is for production servers like DC, DB server, exchange, etc. I was hired as IT consultant but they didn't listen to me. Bottom line is it cost them more than what it would have cost them if they had bought servers from reliable vendors like HP or Dell. I wouldn't advice it to anyone serious about productivity.
actually, we bought both a dell server and made one with an asus server board, opteron 1354 and kingston ecc rams.
so far the assembled server somehow runs better and has more features (dual gigabit lan, parallel port, serial port, etc.)
Get DIY parts for savings. For branded ones the support would be difficult if your here in the Philippines but if your in states get the branded ones since you would get all the support you could unlike here in the Phils.
Just my 2 cents
