Talking Buying Dell Server or Making own server

    Good day,

We're thinking of purchasing a server package from Dell. I'm s hipping it from the US since it is very expensive here and takes about the same time.

    Question:
If I buy a TYAN or ASUS server board, buy a server proc, and server ECC rams. . . is it going to be just as good as buying the server package from Dell?

Any inputs would be highly appreciated.

    Salamat

define server? simple server lang like the one on internet cafe's. yea it's better to make your own.

but if it's a critical server - like file/database server with 20-40 harddisk?
with parts that doesnt look like a typical desktop computer?
    like
    Spoiler!

    Spoiler!

What happens if your server starts having problems?

    techsupport man guro pinaka importante.
yea i guess better buy it from the store and get the techsupport and warranties.
if you have the expertise, why not.
if it just like an ordinary computer - it's cheaper to build one.

OS installation and configurations ang lisud.

    --------------------
we had an ordinary yet powerful PC turned into a server running email/file/database server. 30-50 users connect to it.
hdd corruption/server stability was always the issue.
    just wasnt reliable enough.

unlike the server we have in the US, which worldwide employees connect to it.
we had to replace our pc server with a "true" server.

yup i'm referring to "true" servers. although we have not reached that critical phase yet, I plan on investing para kausa ra gasto.
yup, i've looked at the blade servers of dell but i'll start with the poweredge servers lang usa.
thing is dugayan ko because i have to have it shipped via sea para dili kaayo mahal. . . although barato gihapon mogawas even if air as compared to prices here.

re tech support, dell officially supports windows server, suse, and red hat. but so far ok raman gamit uban. we'll start with Cent OS.

there's no discussion anymore if "true" server or not because i think lahi man ang server proc, board, and ram for a "true" server.

which brings me back to the question, is it the same if i get "true" server components vs buying a dell packaged server? my reason is so I can ship the components via air and it will arrive faster. . .

    any inputs?

    salamat

that's what i was thinking of kay i've read also that dell is starting to stop 3rd party raid controllers like 3ware and promise coz they have their own hardware raid controller.

thing is, wala man available nga server board dinhi ram ug proc. . .

mao ni ako ganahan paliton. . .

    1) ram, 8 gig ani
    Newegg.com - Kingston 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM ECC Unbuffered DDR2 800 (PC2 6400) Desktop Memory Model KVR800D2E6K2/4G - Server Memory

    2) opteron quad proc 75 watts
    Newegg.com - AMD Opteron 1354 Budapest 2.2GHz 4 x 512KB L2 Cache 2MB L3 Cache Socket AM2 75W Quad-Core Processor - Processors - Servers

    3) asus server board

Newegg.com - ASUS M2N-LR Socket AM2 NVIDIA nForce Professional 3600 ATX AMD Opteron 1000 series Dual core ready Server Motherboard - Server Motherboards

any inputs would be highly appreciated.
