I saw Jimi perform at the Berkeley Community Theater, Winterland arena and the San Jose Pop Festival (1968 or 69). He was incredibly loud (and usually out of tune ha ha). He pretty much freaked us all out with his music and guitar playing onstage. Having grown up in the San Francisco area, ALL of the top bands had concerts virtually every weekend and weekday of the year. The only major band that I didn't get a chance to see was The Beatles, but I did see Paul when he toured in 2001. I've seen so many bands/artists that I couldn't possibly list them. We just took it for granted because of where we lived at that time. It was cool, because you frequently bumped into these guys on the street. I met Jeff Beck at a Hot Rod show, 3 of the Rolling Stones and Stevie Nicks at a concert, and Carlos Santana stopped me one day and asked for directions. It wasn't really that big of a deal, because lots of the Bands live/lived in San Francisco. Outdoor concerts were always a blast to attend (often free), but recreating the vibe of "1969" in 2009 would be virtually impossible. It's an altogether different world now. Less idealistic, much faster, and more violent than it was during the "Summer of Love". Too bad...

Yes, I saw the Airplane and Dead a number of times at both indoor and outdoor venues in San Fran.. I saw the Doors in concert, too, but only once. There were lots of cool places to eat in the SF/Bay Area, and it was common to see "rock stars" hanging out. I used to frequent a resto near my house and I became good friends with the mom and sis of Billie Joe from Green Day (they were waitresses there ha ha) and we all shopped at the same dept. store. The guys from Metallica used to grab burgers at another local hangout in nearby Albany. It wasn't a big deal at the time because we all went there for the excellent burgers...

The Haight/Ashbury area was kinda dirty and a little scary. Lots of criminal types frequented the area, but it was cool to buy posters and paraphernalia there. The "Summer of Love" didn't last nearly long enough.. But the music was exciting, and definitely shaped my guitar playing and style. It will be interesting to see which acts will perform at any future Woodstock concert. The acts who performed at the original Woodstock (and 1994 concert) were a reflection of what was popular at the time. My only hope is that the promoters will avoid booking any artists that rely on pre-recorded tracks and/or lip-synching.

Try to locate a copy of "The Musical History Tour" by Joel Selvin. It's a cool book, loaded with info about the SF/Bay Area music scene from the 50s thru the 90s. Loaded with lots of great musical anecdotes.
