    Default Guitar In Action

Hello fellow players, please share your ideas about bass/guitar playing. What do you usually do when playing in a jam session? stage? How do you approach bass/lead solos when doing your turn? Share your tips, tricks, techniques. Let us learn from each other and help out those new in fretworld.

Please let us refrain from throwing mud. Be a PRO. Let's roll!

To begin with, in a jam session, it's important to discuss the mechanics of what to play. Discuss the genre, progression cycle and parts of each player. Identify how many bars each has to play and when to return back to the progression. Do not play cover songs otherwise you forfeit the purpose of a jam session. Start with a simple 3-chord progression and put variety with beats, rhythm, and groove. Try to mix genres with smooth transition to cover all aspects of instrumental creativity. Example: start with Country, then raise the floor to Rock and bang the walls to Metal. Another is to kick-off with a light Jazz, then cry out to soulful Blues and loose yourself with New age. Dance yourself to light Samba, pull the strings to Bossa nova and get a dance partner with Spanish Flamenco. Try these or you may create your own.

It is essential that EACH player has a role to play and in turn contribute to the entire jam.

As a player, gel with your mates. Make sure you do not "overheard" yourself too much.
    Listen to what's going on.

As a guitarist, make sure to prepare yourself of your incoming turn. Don't just fumble over your scales and play your exercises or fave riff. Stop wasting time. Focus on sounding melodically, and play with ease. This is the perfect time we need to train those "little butterflies inside our stomach" so remain light and steady. Play your notes clean and defined. Avoid the inkling to shred if you're not ready. It's better to play slowly than mess up dirty. In this way, you challenge yourself to progress from a session player into a virtuoso when you hit the stage.

If you mess up, wait for your turn again and nail those notes with lightning precision. Above all. ENJOY.

    Now, its your turn!

Thanks for the tips! Yeah i enjoy jam sessions over doin covers. Maybe a rythm from a song then improvise. Mas naay freedom and ma exercise ang creativity. Spontaneity thrills me and it doesnt hurt if u miss a note. And sometimes, u can surprise yourself..just my experience
