Religion only teaches salvation in general. Athiesm can be considered a relative term. A buddhist can be considered an athiest to Christians or vice versa. Viewing religion via the Christian-Judeo type, IMO, is not enough to understand what religion really is.

My friend and I had a debate once about this topic. Her being an uber R.Catholic and me who rarely goes to chuch. I asked her, why do we need religion? Its has been the one of the reasons people die, go to war and a lot of bad sh*t happenin' to this world. I know our country is very religious, and doesn't like to talk about this topic. But I think as the years pass,people are becoming more "Liberated" thinking that they don't need religion. What do you think? post your replies, rants and etc. Thanks

For me, I believe that religion, at its best, brings us closer to God.

It is true that many people in the world today, and in the past, have done a lot of awful things to each other in the name of religion. But that just goes to show that we human beings have a tendency for intolerance and hate. It says nothing against religion itself. The Christian faith, for instance, talks about original sin. Man's nature is somehow fallen because of original sin. We have a tendency to do things that deep in our heart we know we shouldn't do. It also talks about forgiveness, self-sacrifice, and self-emptying love.

I believe that "liberation," as it is popularly understood, doesn't necessarily mean progress or freedom. Jesus came to give us true freedom, and that is freedom from the consequences of sin, which is ultimately death.

I believe that religion, at its best, can bring us closer to this true freedom.

i don't question the goodness of what the bible preaches..pero somehow all this goodness is inherent in all of us one can be "kind to others" or "respect thine parents" or "not steal" these can be practised without any adherence to any kind of religion...unless of course if you grew up in an environment where all of the opposites of this kind acts are normal..or you just have a twisted mind..pero i can safely assume dli ta ingon ana dri..and it disgusts me most of the time that all of you theistic guys always puts this hidden copyright to moralistic virtues..abi kay dli ko mutuog ginoo i am assumed that dli ko murespeto sa akong parents or mangawat or mang rape etc..that's totally bullcrap dude!!

religion is a good thing because as social beings, mao na nakaorganize sa mga tawo in order to live according to certain morals and traits sa founder/s. naa direction mga life sa mga tawo. the downsides would depend if uyon or dili uyon ang mga tawo ani.

being religious or atheist would matter or would not matter. as long as you have principles as a citizen and an individual
