There are really a lot of ways to trim down the abdominal area but it all boils down to one thing: getting rid of unnecessary belly fats. To get to it, you've got to understand how the body works, the higher the metabolism, the higher to probability of burning those fats. Right now, there are a lot of exercise variations, I'll post the one that I am currently doing right now.
First is cardio. I jog and sprint and if I'm in the gym, I hit the stationary bike. It is also good to jog and sprint uphill, it does more than doing it in a plain area.
Second is doing crunches. Sit-ups alone will cannot suffice. There are a lot of variations about crunches that targets different abdominal muscles groups and you can find them on the net. YouTube.com and Bodybuilding.com are very good sources of info. But, don't ever think of doing hundreds and thousands of crunches in one setting, it won't help. In fact, abs exercises can last for about 15 minutes the most if done properly and trust me, you won't like the feeling at times especially at the start.
And lastly, look at your diet. Eating too much or depriving yourself won't help either. Fitness gurus all over the world suggest that instead of taking 3 full meals a day, break it down to 5-6 small meals everyday. In my case, I normally eat 4 small meals and only during I feel hungry. Aside from that, try to get rid of oily, fried, and starchy foods.
So in short, cardio, crunches, and proper diet can do wonders. It's not that difficult, there's the internet to help you out. You can get those lean abs without going to the gym.
