Oslob fire video shows form like ‘Virgin Mary’

A video clip taken of the Oslob parish church burning at dawn has excited residents, who see in the flames the outline of a woman they liken to the Virgin Mary and figures of “angels”.

The video footage, taken by a resident using a mobile phone, was uploaded in YouTube, reaching viewers here and abroad.

“The video on my phone was taken by my nephew,” said Betty Uy, Oslob municipal officer.

Uy was referring to Joseph Claudius Mision, an Internet café owner, who used his Nokia 2760 to take a video of the dawn fire that hit the 160-year-old church of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception Parish in Oslob, 117 km south of Cebu City.

Mision took the footage from the St. Mary’s Academy, a few meters from the burning church.

In one of two video clips, the phone camera is aimed for a few seconds upwards at the roof of the church, where a column stands backlighted by flames.

For some Catholic believers, the shape of the column resembles that of a woman, in particular the Virgin Mary, with smaller figures at her side resembling “angels.”

“Nag video-video lang siya dayon nakakita siya naay nawong sa aso (He just took a video and he later saw a figure that resembled a human face in the smoke),” Uy said.

It was Jenny Marie Aranguez, who works in the Internet café owned by Mision, who uploaded the video in the the Internet.

YouTube is a video sharing website where users can upload, view and share video clips.

Two clips were posted, each lasting one to three minutes.

“It was uploaded so more people can view the video. Even Oslob natives who are now living abroad have asked about it,” Uy said.

For those who see a religious meaning in the flames, the video shows the Virgin Mary looking after the townspeople.

“Tan-awa ang simbahan, wala nahurot, ang birhen wala nasunog, ang notebook na gi-pirmahan sa mga tawo, ang Blessed Sacrament og ang prayer room wala gyud naunsa (Look at the church; it was not completely destroyed. The statue of the Virgin Mary did not catch fire, the notebook that contained the signatures of the people, the Blessed Sacrament and the prayer room were not damaged),” she said.

The notebook that Uy was referring to contains the pledges of 1,757 families in Oslob who promised to pray the Rosary everyday.

The book is usually placed beside the high relief image of Our Lady of Immaculate Conception, which was protected by a glass pane at the altar of the church before the fire.

“Gi-protektahan mi sa Birhen (The Virgin Mary protected us),” Uy said.
Adeth Entong, a utility worker at the municipal health center, told Cebu Daily News he believes the video footage showed a “miracle.”

“There were two angels who seemed to be keeping the fire at bay,” she said in Cebuano.

Uy said that uploading the video could also call attention to their need to rebuild the church but they have not received any pledge from people who saw the video.
