Katong mga "Yehey hapit na 5pm, out na ko!" type of employees/workers. They don't really care about the company, only the money they earn from the company. In the long run, they don't establish a "valued relationship" with "the hand that feeds them" and thus to me is a sign why we aren't prospering. People should start loving their jobs, so that when they do so, they would start to care about the economy more, from a better perspective, rather than just a pure consumerist vantage point.

Perhaps, some causes of poverty are the 7 habits of highly ineffective people:

    1. Be Pro-Activity
    - get busy even without purpose

    2. Begin with the Ending in Mind
    - wala pa gani gasugod, give-up na dayon

    3. Put First Things Whenever Convenient
    - ignore priorities
    - randomness guarantees novelty, even if that means new trouble

    4. Think Lose/Lose
    - why take a risk or waste effort?

    5. Seek First to to be Understood then, if He or She Explains perhaps, One may Understand
    - say or do anything that comes to mind then, regret later, if any
    - one’s point of view precedes any other
    - it is other people’s problem if they don’t understand one’s situation

    6. Refuse to Cooperate
    - divide and be conquered

    7. Sharpen the Axe
    - get even everytime
    ---

This is in parody of the “7 Habits of Highly Effective People” by Stephen R. Covey. I don’t mean to suggest that we buy the book but, it’s quite popular enough for the purpose.

Perhaps it a combination of insufficient financial literacy, lack of entrepreneurship, and negative perceptions about risk taking and accumulation of wealth from culture and religion.

This is an idea to possibly counter these.

    I. Proposal

Perhaps the government in close cooperation with the media, television & movie industries, educational institutions, business sector, AND religious organizations can launch a vigorous two year campaign on financial literacy and entrepreneurship.

Besides mass education, the aim is also a shift in perception and values from progress relying on government, powers-that-be, luck, and so on, to one relying on personal responsibility, so that people can get moving to helping themselves.

This will also create an expectation that the government and other sectors will lend support on individual initiatives. Therefore, it pays to first lay-out the foundation of such support before launching the campaign.

    II. Coordinated Roles

The government can prepare the agencies or pass relevant laws (Presidential Decrees will do) to lay-out the support infrastructure. At the same time, it will coordinate and establish formal agreements and pledges of support from the others. The plan can be adjusted during this time also.

The media, television & movie industry, and educational institutions can inject reports, articles, documentaries, shows, programs, movies, seminars, and subjects designed to encourage and teach financial literacy, entrepreneurship, and personal initiative as key to individual and social prosperity and progress.

The business sector probably knows what to do regarding this.

The religious institutions can also help. They can remove that mental barrier in people's minds about prosperity, and clarify that improving financially does not automatically mean that they are going to hell as long as their intentions are noble (helping family and others). It is how we use money and not money itself that is evil. However, we don't want people to get materialistic. This is also their important role, and that is to emphasize the need to balance prosperity with spiritual and the other values at the same time. After all, the churches themselves are rich, perhaps implying the same to their leaders. Maybe they can show themselves as examples of how it is possible to combine religion and wealth.

Once everything is prepared, the campaign can be launched in full force.

    III. Political Implications

Once people's perceptions shifts from unrealistic expectations on government to individual responsibility regarding national prosperity, certain political figures might become more favorable than others, particularly those who are perceived to be knowledgeable in business or economics.

Since the term of the current President is almost up, politicians maybe divided on the issue, in view of the upcoming elections. The government may support it if the favored heir happens to be knowledgeable in business or economics. However, opposition from politicians who are not similarly perceived might initiate counter campaigns which can cause mixed feelings on the people. The extent of what they can do is not sure, but that the campaign might not be so unified anymore is more definite though.

The best time to implement it might be sometime after the next President assumes office.
