POLICE arrested yesterday the suspect in the beheading of a construction worker in Sitio Makatol, Barangay Biga, Toledo City.

Supt. Ricky Delelis, head of Toledo City Police Station, said they caught Glen Versaga loitering in Fuente Osmeña, Cebu City at 1:30 a.m. where he hid after the crime.

“Nihulga siya nga buk-an ko og ulo mao to ako na lang giunhan (He threatened to kill me, so I acted first),” the 21-year-old farmer told reporters.

Versaga’s arrest came after he confessed to a cousin of killing Alony Olasiman, 39, of Barangay Carmelo, Tuburan last Nov. 1.

Olasiman’s mutilated body was found the next day dumped in a hole while his head was recovered last Thursday buried 800 meters away.

Niña Mae Aban, 20, when interviewed by the media, said Versaga confessed to her last Tuesday of killing Olasiman after she asked the suspect about it.

“Many people were suspecting him, so I asked him and he admitted to the crime,” she said.

She said the suspect also showed him the identification card of Olasiman.

Versaga, who was reportedly drugged at that time, threatened to kill her if she will tell authorities about what he had done.

“He said he’ll kill me or something will happen to my family,” she said.

Two days later, she told a barangay tanod about her cousin’s confession.

Versaga recalled meeting Olasiman in the evening of Nov. 1 when he stabbed and decapitated the victim with a knife.

“He had threatened me. I don’t know why,” he said.

Versaga said he was the only one who did it, though police are not discounting the possibility he had cohorts.

He refused to elaborate when asked what caused Olasiman to threaten him and why he also cut the victim’s genitals.

Apart from Olasiman’s case, the police learned that Versaga is also involved in other crimes, such as in Cebu City.

“We are now looking if he has a warrant,” Delelis said. They also have to find the knife that Versaga used in the crime.

Senior Supt. Noel Gillamac, director of Cebu Provincial Police Office, lauded the Toledo City Police for solving the crime in less than a week.

He directed them not to rely on the extrajudicial confession of the suspect but to build the case on forensic evidence.
