Default Noli Me Tangere in English Audio Book In UK

    Let's be a little patriotic .

New 'Noli Me Tangere' audiobook launched in UK

It's based on a popular English translation from 1961 by Leon Maria Guerrero III, a former ambassador of the Philippines in the United Kingdom.

The Philippine Embassy in London recently launched the English language audiobook of the classic Filipino novel, Noli Me Tangere.

The new audiobook, also complimented by an e-book of the same title, could take Rizal’s ideas even further by introducing the text to a wider audience from a multimedia-savvy digital generation.
    Going 'techie' with Rizal's masterpiece

"It’s time for a new way of telling a story through mobile, through web, ebooks, audiobooks, so there should be no barrier to people reading the book or reading the story at least," said David Guerrero, head of Guerrero Publishing.

He added: "This is the book that sparked off the revolution against the Spanish. It’s also the book that brought the idea of the Filipino nation together, and the other thing is that the characters that he wrote about in satire, many of those people still seem to be with us today."

The launch at the embassy was attended by publishers with guests including diplomats, members of the press, and British Filipinos.

"We chose London to launch the audiobook because we’re seeking an international audience. We want people everywhere in the world to get to know more about Jose Rizal, the importance of Noli, and that’s why we chose to have the event in London and use an English actor," Guerrero added.
Downton Abbey actor lends voice to Noli audiobook

The challenge of reading the audiobook British stage and screen actor Richard E. Grant.

Grant, who currently stars in hit television series Downton Abbey, was tasked to narrate the Jose Rizal novel using a popular English translation from 1961 by Leon Maria Guerrero III, a former ambassador of the Philippines in the United Kingdom.

"I enjoyed reading the book enormously," Grant told ABS-CBN Europe.

He explained: "I was so struck by the fact that it combined so many genres of being an absolute page turning thriller, in a sense, as well as history of the most incredible colonial social injustice. And then it’s livened by incredible humor, high comedy and satire."

It was the first time Grant read Noli Me Tangere, and by doing so discovered a part of Philippine history that many say defined the nation through the words written by Rizal.
The audiobook launch coincideed with Philippine-British Friendship Week, and to mark the occasion, Guerrero Publishing is giving away copies of Noli Me Tangere in English, available for free on iTunes only this week.

Why is it that the Philippine Revolution is dubbed as the Tagalog War?

Did they forget that Cebuanos took part during the outbreak of the revolution too?

    Pantaleón Villegas ( July 27, 1873 – April 8, 1898 ), General Arcadio Maxilom (November 13, 1862–August 10, 1924), just to name a few.

But for sure, nobody is familiar with these names because in school, we Cebuanos are only taught about Tagalog history.

Oh well... but to those interested, you may read this: SUMAD - Essays for the Centennial of the Revolution in Cebu by Erlinda Kintanar-Alburo.

Ang akong mahinumdoman sa akong NMT classes sauna kay ang "Talasalitaan" ra jud... hassle kaayo to. Muo di jud muexceed og 80 akong grado sa Pilipino sauna sa HS.

We need to rekindle Rizal's aspiration the same predicament they have before is now a deja vu in the present the only contrast is that in the current situation the colonizers are not anymore foreign but domestic, they are the lords and kings of Philippine politics.

I respect your opinion Sio.. but I disagree. Both Noli and Fili are far from "very good".. The fact that they are required reading simply means they are not "very good". Awa ang sales sa Harry Potter ug Lord of the Ring series... people spend money and time to read the entire series. Mao nay "very good".

Sorry Rizal.. just being honestly frank here.

There are many more literary pieces worthy of precious reading time.

Bro, there's a wide bridge between Revolutionary books versus Fantasy books, and these two don't mix. And it's not the number of sales that matters, it's the impact of it's message and how it changed the world.

Example: You can simply say "Uncle Tom's Cabin" isn't better than Harry Potter, because it has fewer sales. But if "Uncle Tom's Cabin" wasn't published, America would have been very different by now. Black Americans would probably still be under slavery. Most Fantasy books just entertain people, while their revolutionary counterparts educate readers in politics and government, literature, society, academic subjects such as science and math, and religion. Karl Marx's "Communist Manifesto" changed Russia as how "Noli Me Tangere" changed Filipinos.

Ambot lang pud boss.. yes, I agree. Uncle Tom's Cabin.. as well as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer, even Watership Down are great pieces of literature. However, with regards to the topic of this thread, it is my personal opinion that Rizal's Noli and Fili are never in the category of "very good", even if we talk about, as you say, "revolutionary" tomes. Works that spark a nation into change. That would draw us to the works of Ernesto Che Guevarra then... of Mandela, or Ghandi. But Rizal... oh, I just can not bro.

Back to literature, I am of the opinion that Dickens is a lot more readable... immortal as Scrooge is. Crime and Punishment is long and dragging.. but Dostoyevsky is Russian.. they talk a lot.

Sometimes, we open up a page and get absorbed in the print the page contains. We are transported to a world much beyond those pages, a world much bigger than contained within the covers of a book. Such a world transforms the mind of the reader or readers. That is revolution... a lot more than mere entertainment.
