@higanstolsdawen ballistic helmets as used by our military and that of the US are NIJ rated level IIIA meaning it can protect you from ballistic threats from almost all handguns. The primary use of the helmet is for protection against shrapnel and limited protection against ballistic threats... Limited protection is better than no protection at all. According to the lieutenants colleague, he was hit at the lip of the helmet, where as in any type of armor is at its weakest. These helmets were not purchased by our government. These were given by the Americans to the unit during the units inception which was US trained and equipped. Now I don't know why people are trying to politicize the matter by linking to Napoles etc, as to my knowledge, there is no failure of the helmet here.

This is the very reason why our Army Special Forces soldiers are buying equipment off their own pockets. These guys aren't paid enough like their foreign SOF counter parts unya makuhaan pa jud ilang sweldo para palit ug gear. Nya mayg mga barato ni nga mga gear...
And this is also the reason why people are saying it is "Napoles' fault" because aside from buying their own gear our SOF units have no other choice for protective gear except year 2002 issued hand-me-downs from US troops . I mean, had there been sufficient funds I'm pretty sure they would be purchasing better gear.
As one SF guy I know put it: "We have quality operators, but we just don't have the quality gear -- so we buy our own tools for our trade. We don't rely on poor quality Gov't issue". And the gear this guy bought wasn't even brand new. He bought second hand stuff and halos mapurdoy na daw siya. Other sources for his gear were from trades and from other unit guys who give/donate their gear.

A bit of OT na here, but I will chime in...
Contrary to popular belief, our troops are not that ill equipped already... For the LRB, formerly known as the LRC, the unit is trained and equipped by the Americans during its inception. The equipment given is new as told to me by one of their officers who got stationed for a while here. They got plate carriers with level III plates, M4 with sopmod accessory package and nvgs, 7.62 sniper rifles etc... Whatever the Americans are using that time, they also use. Up to the armorer tools to maintain said platforms were also given. In effect we cant really say hand-me-downs... I'm not sure yet with regards to the equipment of the SF... However, regular infantry units like the 3IDs 78th IB already got protective body armor issued to them way back the 2000 campaign if I remember correctly. They just don't use them regularly, only for when the mission calls for it.

I don't think those were donated, more of like we purchased it from them...![]()
I am not arguing your points although I think the operative word here is that "The equipment given is relatively new...". I'd say yes they've been given NVGs. But, although they were 3rd Gen, those were the older model PVS-7s and -14s. SOPMODs? Yes, but it's the Block 1, and it's not even the complete package. So maybe they've been given ACOGs and AN/PEQ-2s. No Spectre DRs or PEQ-15s. SAPI plates instead of the new ESAPIs. And how about comms?
I guess my point is these are still hand-me-downs. We won't be seeing our SOF units with these types of equipment anytime soon. But you are correct in saying the LRB/LRC's inventory of weapons and equipment is the best compared to any other SOF unit in the AFP. Manghuwam nalang man gani usahay ang Army SF sa ilaha...
I think I've said enough here. Sorry for the slight OT.
