CEBU Gov. Hilario Davide III asked the Badian Municipal Government to investigate the case of a woman who lost her baby allegedly because the personnel of a birthing center failed to attend to her.
The couple, Benjamin and Regina Javierto, reportedly boarded a pedicab after a midwife of the birthing center referred them to Badian District Hospital.
However, Regina delivered while they were on their way to the hospital and the baby fell from the floor of the pedicab to the ground, while the vehicle kept running.
Regina was seven months pregnant. She gave birth to a girl, according to records of the Badian District Hospital.
“So we’ll see how we can lend assistance to the mother...I urge the Municipal Government to look into this incident,” Davide said.
Benjamin, 44, went to the Badian Police Station last Tuesday to have the incident recorded in its blotter.
PO3 Josefina Beriarmente said that it was going to be the couple’s ninth child.
They went to the birthing center around 5 a.m. last Saturday, but a midwife reportedly told them to go to the district hospital because the center lacked an incubator for premature babies.
Beriarmente said that according to Benjamin, he asked the midwife to check his wife, but the health care worker told them to rush to the district hospital instead.
The couple left, but the woman gave birth while they were still on their way.
In a report by GMA Channel 7’s “Balitang Bisdak”, Santiago del Rosario, the pedicab driver, said the baby no longer cried when it came out, while they were just meters away from the hospital.
Badian Municipal Health Officer Dr. Urduja Espiritu said the birthing center can accommodate normal deliveries, but potentially critical ones have to be sent to the hospital.
She said Regina was supposed to give birth in September yet.
Espiritu, however, said it was not true that the patient was not attended to at all.
Based on a prenatal examination dated July 18, Espiritu explained that the baby was no longer moving and no heartbeat could be heard.
The attending midwife on that day advised Regina to go to the Badian District Hospital for an ultrasound. The birthing center’s workers did not find out whether she heeded the advice.
Regina later went back to the birthing center and asked for medicine for her high blood pressure.
“Actually, basin namatay inside sa womb sa mama (The baby could have died while still in the womb),” said Espiritu.
Espiritu added that she met with Mayor Robburt Librando yesterday and he told her that the incident will be investigated.
Sun.Star Cebu tried but failed to contact Mayor Librando for his statement.
