    If meteor impact is imminent, I'd assume the world governments would start implementing Assurance contracts to fund a defense system of some sort.

    Yes, missile defenses could only create more casualties. The best solution perhaps, is to send a spacecraft that would rendezvous with the asteroid or meteor and change its trajectory so that it won't hit the Earth.
