First impressions misleads console problems
So a few weeks ago, I purchased a replacement Xbox 360 console, which was the new 4GB Xbox 360 slim. My first impressions fooled me, making me believe the new
Slim console was amazing, but i soon found myself in a bundle of messes.
When i got my slim, i was hooked on Bungie's Halo: Reach. I played the campaign for days before i moved on to online matchmaking. I soon encounter tons of problems. The first and most disappointing problem was the fact that the console limits
game features. There is a whole playlist of several types of game modes on Halo: Reach that cannot be played on the 4GB Slim consoles. Thats right, online Cooperative games cannot be played on the new console! This does not only prevent you from playing Co-op missions online with your friends, but you can't even play firefight or other co-op type games. I first noticed this when I tried to complete the daily challenges on Halo: Reach. Everyday there is at least two challenges that require you to play a Co-op based game online. Since 4GB Slim owners can't ever play the game type, it makes it virtually impossible to get the achievement for completing all of the challenges for a week. I also get left out of parties with my friends because they want to play co-op game types. Whenever I try to play online co-op, an error appears flashing saying "A user does not have the required Harddrive to play this Game Type."
After my disappointment and frustration with the problem, I set out to Google and searched the reasoning behind the problems. I came across a few articles that were written the day Halo: Reach came out, which led people to believe that there was just a bug with the game and that it would be patched in an upcoming update. Days went on with no fix, and thats when Microsoft released an announcement behind the problems. The problem doesn't come from the game at all, but the 4GB Slim console. The console doesn't actually have a Harddrive, but 4GB of internal storage. This storage is essentially like a built in flashdrive, and cannot boot some game content due to the fact that the storage is not compatible for specific content. Who ever has ever bought or ever plans to buy the 4GB Slim, will never be able to access these specific features unless they buy a Harddrive from Microsoft, which ranges to around an additional $80.00. Microsoft didn't clarify this problem before being sold, and basically sucks people into buying the official Microsoft Harddrives, or even the more expensive consoles with loads of memory you will never get close to using.
Microsoft essentially traps everyone who buys the
4GB Slim console because if you want all game features, you have to buy the official Xbox 360 Slim Harddrive. You can't even use the model's Harddrives..
Another problem that I encountered with the new console that fueled even more of a rage, is the built in "wifi" router that is a piece of garbage. Yeah the concept sounds impressive, but Microsoft never mentioned how bad the router actually is. I noticed small lags and and occasional dropped connections, but you always get that when playing online. I then noticed that I couldn't connect to Xbox live parties with my friends, getting a message saying that I am not connected to Xbox Live. I can't even play the limited matchmaking games online with my friends. I don't only hate that i can rarely connect with my friends, but when I play solo online, i ALWAYS get disconnected from Xbox Live and it causes me removed from the game and reconnect to Xbox live. Ton's of people will say that its because of my network router, which is not true at all. My brothers both have the original model of the Xbox 360, and they both use the wireless adapter, but don't experience any of these problems. I never had these problems with my old 360.
I would advise not buying the 360 Slim console, because it's truly a waste of money for a quieter console. I wouldn't ever buy anything Microsoft makes in fact. I have had nothing but problems with everything i've owned from Microsoft. I have had a Mac for 3 years now, and have never had a problem.
