That is just the cost of manufacturing the product, Direct cost in short. You don't make profit by just taking into account the direct cost. There are still other costs to be considered like the advertising, marketing and distribution, etc. The best thing to do is to look at those manufactures who actually spent more on the direct cost of manufacturing of their products than those who spent more on advertising and marketing. Apple does the latter that is why there are so many issues with there iphone and ipad releases. But advertising is very powerful that it makes apple look very awesome.

The reason why smartphone companies keep growing is because everyday, the number of customers who are satisfied with their product or at least, who are convinced that the smartphone is worth its price is increasing.
