There's this documentary about a man who had an accident and got his head hit by a ball. After that, he could tell you what day of the week it was on a specific date. (It's around the 9 mins. into the video)

    Incredible Brain
It's important to note that in incidents like this, it's clear that something got "rewired" in the brain through traumatic (in this case, blunt-force trauma) means, and while it does produce startling/entertaining/astounding results, this doesn't necessarily mean it's a "better" state--the fact of the matter is, something got damaged, yet the net result "appears" to have been a positive one.

An analogy. I used to have a cassette tape player back in high school. I noticed that sometimes the sound quality deteriorated while I carried it around, so I developed a habit of banging on it from time to time, and surprisingly enough, the sound quality improved. Then one day, the thing stopped producing any sound at all. A few months went by, and one day, being bored and nothing else to do, I decided to take it apart--what I found out was, the tape head was loose (bad factory assembling) by default, producing the low-quality sound, but with my repeated banging, the tape head sometimes settles into a position that produced a more clear sound. This gave me the wrong impression that what I did was a "fix" to the tape player, when in fact, there was clearly something wrong with it. Had I only known before, that the sudden moments of clarity meant that the tape head was "going back into proper position", then I would've opened up the tape player then, tightened the screws so as to allow it to maintain that position. Instead, my constant banging loosened it further, and created cracks on the mount, and eventually, the plastic mount gave way, and one day, the tape deck stopped functioning.

The cassette player is a great analogy, we used to have the same problem with our cable box.
Yup, he was a lucky guy and the chances of that accident resulting positively was slim. Is there a process of somehow tinkering with the brain to trigger certain abilities?

Yes. The easiest way? Drugs and alcohol. Notice how you "seem" to sing an awful lot better after 4 beers?
