as the midnight hour approaches, the decent people of the city abandon the streets for the thugs, the murderers and thieves, the lawless vermin who thrive in blood, chaos and crushed innocence. They come out of the rotting underbelly of the city, defiant and unafraid, laughing at the impotent law officers huddled inside their police precincts.

as the criminal masses take to the streets, they make way for none save one: a man so corrupt and evil that even the the most hardened criminals cast down their eyes and give way when he passes. a man so cruel and malicious that he is lord of the night and its malevolent dwellers. a man so dark that none can believe that he ever was a man.

but he was once a man. and, like all men, he used to have dreams and ambitions. he used to have a pure and noble soul. but like all men, it was tested - and it was that test that turned the man into a demon.

and now, he walks, a demon of a man. rolling a 25 cent coin between his fingers. in this night, as in many other nights before, he reminisces of the day when he tried taking lady justice at her word - and she let him down.

they laughed at him, called him foolish. they are dead now but he didn't laugh when he killed them. that is fortunate - for when the dark man laughs, the city screams...
